    Typar versus Tyvek

I have a 7x7 Tyvek Tarp and it really impresses me. I only use it as a common area, or a gear tarp (sometimes as a gear hammock). I know Cuben is all the rage, but Tyvek seems damned near indestructible when used as a tarp (as a groundcloth, not so much).

The link below shows a comparison between Tyvek and Typar. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with Typar for tarps, groundcloths, and camping, etc. It sounds like a superior product to Tyvek, in many respects.

For house wrap it may be better, but for our applications probably not.

I have a roll at home and I'll say its typically stiffer, heavier and less nice to work with for these types of projects. Also it has a random fibre type "scrim" bonded (sort of) to the back that is tough to cut and is fuzzy and catches on things all the time. Will collect bits of leaves and bark and small twigs, etc if you have it on the ground out of doors.

Not so handy for tarps or ground cloths.

Stick with Tyvek for hammocking gear. Its way better.

Also, try standing on a piece of typar.... Better yet, get a friend to stand on it and video/upload the results. Very slippery dry, greased eel like when wet.

It makes a great crazy carpet in the winter.
