I used it to seal my new OES tarp*, worked like a charm. It seems thinner than it is: so put it on thinner than you think it should be, it dries / sets up just about how you have it on the nylon. So, there are a few places on my tarp that had a few "glumps" on it, but the thick stuff peals off fairly easy, then reseal being careful next time. The thin spots stick like glue

Once I got smart, I used a sponge brush to spread the stuff thinner! So the glumps were on the first half of the ridgeline. 1 tube did a 13.5 foot ridgeline and a JRB stuff sack seams. Even with the excees I put on then had to redo.

*Brian sewed it in his dorm room, no ventilation or time for sealing.

That stuff is awesome. SOOOO much easier to apply than McNetts. The latter is designed to waste the stuff so that you use (and then buy) more. Many thanks to HC4U for turning us on to this stuff.

I've been using and recommending Permatex for years. It seems more durable than Silnet, is thinner, penetrates seams better and is easier to spread lightly so the seam sealing does not add a lot of weight. And it is half the price of Silnet.

thompson's water seal also will work. it may discolor your tarp though, so i'd do a little spot test 1st

    cheap spray bottle ??

    Hi

While wandering through the Dollar Store this afternoon, I saw some cheap spray bottles that look to hold about a litre or so (quart for you non-metric folks) . I wonder if the silicone could be mixed with the thinner by shaking in the bottle, then spritzed onto the tarp ??? Has anyone tried this method yet, or is the mixture too thick? I will be sealing a few tarps this next week, outside, weather-permitting, and would rather spray than brush.

Thanks for any and all info!

It's way too thick for that. The nozzles would clog up before you got a good start.

Honestly, I'm not sure I'd even use a brush. A tube of GE Silcone II and your index finger works very very well to apply it thinly and thoroughly. I think you'll find that most of the tarp manufacturers (OES as an example) use that very method. Just clean your finger well afterward. YMMV
