I have no idea what the story is behind Lisa's trail name but she said to say "THANKS!" to you, Crackedup. And she likes her new name!

Thursday evening after setting up camp SweetbabyD, Oh-No, FrontierWoman, and I think that was it spotted a sow & 3 cubs I believe. I'll let them tell a little more about that as I didn't go on that hike.

Saturday morning just after everyone but Hickory left camp I was heading to the back woods for a morning constitutional. Just as I rounded one of the Piney trees I spotted a young black bear about 30 yards away. As it was standing (on all fours) it spotted me, I said hello bear and backed out quietly to go get Hickory so he could see it. Well the bear was gone by the time both of us got back. After that Hickory left on his hike, I stuck around camp to let the knees relax and keep guard. Kinda ruined my morning constitutional though, I didn't feel like being in such a vulnerable position with the possibility that it might decide to come back.

Normis had his hammock setup right back where that bear was at. Probably a good thing he moved up with the rest of us. So I guess I didn't actually fight off any bear, thank goodness.

I almost forgot about this one. Normis was so kind to lend me his book to read while at camp. After making several trips back & forth through camp to make sure that bear didn't smell any food and want to come in, I made a cup of coffee, settled in the hammock reading. Just as I was getting into the book, JD walks into camp me. I ended up spilling coffee all over page 22 of Norm's book. Being the great guy he is, he said don't worry about it. I still feel bad though.

Great recap Cracked - your defense of the camp was much appreciated. No worries on the book - gives me something to remember the trip by!

By the way, I'm fairly sure if I had stayed in my original site, you all would have hung your food bags over my tarp, just for grins....

What a great time. My daughter, with the new trail name of Pioneer Woman, and I want to thank everyone who made this such a great event. Tracy, so sorry you helped plan but couldn't attend.

Here's my Dolly Sods web album. It's a mix of pictures from PW's and my cameras, and my images have geotags so you can track our movement on the map.

Great portrait Knotty, too bad Pioneer Woman was napping, and whats Hickory promoting there. By the way, I went back and corrected Pioneer Woman's trail name in my list.

SweetbabyD & FrontierWoman decided to go on a hike before it got dark. I joined them and we went out of the woods and down a long meadow. It was gray and misty. The wind was blowing 20-30 mph from behind us. Our scent must have gotten blown into some woods 2-300 yards to our right, because Momma and 3 cubs came tearing out of the trees, ran across the meadow and disappeared into the woods on the left side of the meadow. Then on the way back to camp we saw a large doe at the edge of the woods. She stood there just watching us for a few minutes, then took off.

BTW- Crackedup- very nice pictures. Thanks for sharing.

USMCStang, any chance you can post the GPS info from Saturday's hike in the format crackedup did for the other days? Would love to see all the data for that fast paced 11 mile day.
