Jimmy Neutron introduces his DIY Momentum 90 hammock..

Jimmy is a donating member here though I dont know what he posts as.
Here is his new hammock and thanks to him and his Mrs. my early Christmas present-my hope is that this lightweight (less than 6 ounces minus the tree huggers and whoopies) does not drop me like the Nano-7 did!

The hammock was Momentum 90, Gathering sting was 7/64 Amsteel, Woopies were dynaglide 8 ft. Weight was 5.8 oz before woopies and momentum stuff sac. Total after tree huggers and stuff sac was 9.9 oz. Anyone know lighter alternative than the tree huggers??

I wanted to make it the size of a Nano 7. 4*9. That would had made it 1 oz lighter. Essentially, one could make a sub 5 oz hammock with woopies. Medicineman liked the comfort better of the 5*10 size. At 60+ inches tall, I can see that but for those shorter, I definitely would go smaller.

I am still curious how it will hold up on multi night trail use. I insisted on Video the first test, I Hope I would have Medicineman footage for American's funniest Video when it dropped, I guess I will just have to wait. Ha! Ha!

Why not a double layer version?

MedicineMan was looking for ultra light hammock like the Nano 7 that dropped him. The Momentum 90 was the lightest material that I thought would hold him. He has good quality under quilts and did not need the ability to add additional insulation between layers. Double layers would increase the load capacity as well as the overall weight. I still think I am going to order another round of the Momentum and make the smaller size and see what the lowest weight I can get. I should be able to make a sub 5 oz hammock minus tree huggers. I calcualte I should be able to build a 4.4 oz base version at the smaller 4*9 foot size.

Anyway, I will give MedicineMan a few nights out with this one first. I know the Nano dropped him on the third night. I would like it tested 10-14 days first.

I found the micro rip stop Momentum 90 at
http://www.thru-hiker.com/materials/breathable.php When trying to tear by hand, It took quite a bit of force, Similar to the amount for the 1.1 rip stop.

I have not tried this but there has been the idea of using dyna or amsteel hugger and elevating this off the tree bark by inserting sticks every few inches between the rope and the tree bark. Another way to cut some weight would be to use a pair of dyna ucrs instead of whoopies.

Super ultra light will never be an option if one is over 6" or 200#. But a double layer of this is much lighter than any other comparable hammock.

But at the point you are using 2 layers (1.8oz/sq. yd), wouldn't it be a lot easier and cheaper to just use a single layer of 1.9 ripstop?

JimmyNeutron is posting as May0513 if you all didnt make the connection....wonder if a mod can get that changed for Jimmy?
I do high hopes for this hammock though after being dropped I'll never hang it too high.
The 'hand' of this material is worth considering too...it just feels much better than nylon.
I still think the Nano-7 had a micro tear that set up the failure...good idea to inspect our craft every now and then...they do carry us aloft
