I've probably made up around 30 or so prototypes from 'ok' to really bad... Some are really funny and some look sort of promising.

Still looks good though, but true, I might not wear that one around town

I just love to see the different Black Rock inspired hats you guys make! Its great! Keep up the good work.
Yeah, I'm absolutely sure I will only wear it when sleeping or being around with like-minded weirdos.

It's good to hear that your actual blackrock beanie is coming out of a big lot of evaluation. Do you have your different prototypes around and would you mind sharing a glimpse?

Ahm, yes -- haven't tried to look at it from this angle. From this day on let it be known as The Melonhat!

I think I know what happened to cause the rocket watermelon affect. Looking at both hats I see that the second has sharper points. What I mean is at the end of the panel the pattern piece looks like it comes to a long point. On your first hat it looks as though the point is shorter causing the hat to come together in a more rounded shape, less of the rocketman look.

Just my thinking, I have made a few fleece hats and I find the more point the more it ends up being pointy. Thanks for this thread. It looks like you made a rocking beanie.

Jazilla, actually it is the same pattern with three differences:

    1. no horizontal lines causing boxes --> much better loft, but the look needs getting used to...
    2. outer piece of fabric is bigger than the inner, allowing building up loft away from the head.
    3. the pattern for the Fatrocket/Melonhat has been enlarged by 5% to allow additional lofting to the inner side (and besides, the prototype 1 seemed a small tick too narrow), the channels are 2cm longer to allow better covering of my ears (the most important part that needs to be kept warm ).

The joining point looks less sharper (DIY-Blackrock) because the beanie is shaped through the additional horizontal lines which allow it bending more easily. Also, the channels get more pointy and "stable" the more they loft -- and the Fatrocket lofts alot!

The DIY pattern I am using needs more stitching than the one Blackrock Gear applies to the fabrics (as far as I can tell from looking at the pictures of Blackrock beanies floating around the internet). Each channel needs alot of attention when sewing.

Here's an inside-out view of both beanies:

Here are two videos to show how fast the Fatrocket lofts:

KM, that's the original piece I used for the proto 1. Each box is 5x5mm. The Fatrocket's pattern is 5% bigger. You'll have to adjust the pattern's size according to your own head -- but that's a no-brainer. You'll need 12 of these side by side and might want to make the channels a little longer to cover up your ears better!
