Large Dutch Hook Idea

I think this is what I want - a Dutch Hook that fits 7/64 amsteel so I can put it into the loop of my hammock suspensions whoopie slings.

Many people use a bead or something of the sort to protect a whoopie sling loop from getting accidentally pulled into the bury. A Dutch Hook would serve this purpose.

In addition, when the whoopie sling is wrapped around the knot of the MSH, the Dutch Hook could be hooked on the loop below the MSH to keep the loop from spreading and falling off the knot and toggle - the most likely reason for failure in this setup.

A little care would be needed to insure that there is no real load on the hook (natural spread of the whoopie loop around the knot is not being restricted), but that should not be a real problem to resolve.

Is this description clear? Thoughts?

if you havent checked his thread in the donating members section where he filled an order for 1200 larger hooks, take a look, he may have some spares.

i will say that a hook is a neat idea, just to have

Yea, if you read through that thread, the holes on those hooks are made for zing-it and would be too small for 7/64 amsteel. Also the change in hook design would not "clip" onto the line like the regular Dutch Hooks do.

Not ready to make a 1200 hook commitment myself, but if there were enough general interest...

Dutch biners would serve that purpose.
I use Dutch biners in my suspension system. However, I use them between a 12" continuous loop that is larks headed on the hammock and my whoopie slings. The other end of the sling is sewn into the loop on the tree strap. The tree strap is my "bead."
This setup has two other advantages,
1. The Dutch biner, which in under the tarp, acts as a water stop
2. In the event the suspension gets wet or covered with sap, I can remove the it and pack it separately.

That is a great idea. I have hook that would work for Dynaglide and I can easily make something for amsteel when I come back from Mt. Rogers hang this week end.

Rev was talking about a modified Dutch hooks that I made 1200 pieces for. When I get the amsteel version prototyped I will send you some already in whoopies.

I don't think we are talking about the same usage. In my usage, they would not be part of the suspension system directly. They would only limit the size of the whoopie loop around the MSH. I faked up this setup to give a better idea. It's not a real setup, so you will have to use your imagination a little bit.

It was that picture and the next entry (#47) that led me to think the hole was for zing-it. Maybe I shouldn't have jumped to that conclusion.

Mad, are you using your your Dutch Biner in a MSH like this, with a DB in place of the carabiner shown? (Picture blatantly stolen from PapaSmurf, thanks)

I don't know if the opening in the DB is deep enough for running the MSH through, but I think its shorter length may well hold the lines in and prevent them from slipping off the knot of the MSH, which is what I am hoping for.

So, maybe the Dutch Biner is the answer. Just not sure if it will work in this config.
