I have a Wilderness Logics Oldman Winter with pics here,,and you can do anything with the doors you want from folding them back on the inside or out, you can hang it wide open on one side or both with your hiking poles, you can partially shut the doors and completely close them, you can hang it all the way down to the ground or higher for more air flow. You can do the same with a 10' x 12' silnylon OES as I have one of those as well,,pics of both are here.

I really like the versatility of both tarps, the Wilderness Logics green tarp is 5 ozs lighter, love it,

The Mec Silcone Guide is a really large tarp. There are a couple of people in the Ontario Hanging group that have them. They do provide a large coverage area, but due to the length of the tarp at almost 13' (3.9m) they do limit your hanging options base upon distance between trees. The other issue is that with that long ridgeline length you can't get the tarp as close to the hammock in really windy conditions as a tarp with a shorter ridgeline (the tarp will hit the hammock suspension). Of course the bigger the tarp the more it weighs.

The choices in tarp dimensions, shapes, materials and cost is almost endless. Then again there is no right or wrong answer only what works best for youu and your specific needs. I know, not very helpful.

    Cheers

If someone already has a hex shaped tarp and wants to add doors permanently to it, then I agree that the 2QZQ sewn on door option is great. That being said, if someone is buying a brand new tarp and wants doors on it, I think buying one of the large "rectangular" tarps from any of the tarps vendors here (SuperFly, JRB 11x10, OES 4 Season, OldMan Winter, etc) would be a better choice in terms of overall cost.

    Just my $0.02 worth.

    Cheers

@Brian: yeah, that's true - I think I'll just plan to buy my first tarp (whatever that ends up being because ****, are there ever options!) with the options of folding over the ends to close 'em off a bit. Just cheaper that way for now.

I just got my sewing machine fixed, so I'm going to see if I can snag some materials online and get building! I'm thinking that I'll make a gear hammock first (practice with scraps on a smaller scale in case I mess up), then a tarp and maybe even a hammock if all goes well. Fingers crossed! I'll take pictures.

Red I was thinking the same thing. I'd prefer to roll the tarp doors up when not in use rather than have them flapping around in the breeze. Having recently purchased a cuben fiber tarp with doors from zpacks.com - I forwarded your post to Joe at ZPacks and asked if he could fix mine up that way. He said he'd be happy to install the toggles on my new tarp for me.
