I'm sure it would work, but it would be bulky as anything. It doesn't really matter what is inside the quilt as long as it holds a nice air pocket (right?), and the main advantage of down and such is that it compacts down to next to nothing and then regains it's loft when unstuffed.

well, that's why i'm liking the foam idea. I can get a giant bag of "shredded foam" at a hardwear store for next to nothing. It is the mid to high density but it compresses so well. And foam always retakes it's shape...anyone else help me out?

Regular old shredded foam doesn't compress well at all. Better might be something more like the foam in sponges or the LuxuryLite pillow, but it'd still be bulky compared to down (and probably heavy, too).
Thru-hiker.com has climashield insulation at a price that won't break the bank. I'm currently making a no sniveller-type quilt out of this stuff and some 1.1 oz. ripstop from the wally world dollar bin. Hopefully will have it done before the MAHHA hang.

so long as we're thinking out of the box here on this thread...
one of these day's I'm going to try making under insulation on the principles of a BalloonBed.
Used as it is on the ground, I'm pretty sure the balloons will have be between the occupant and the hammock body, in order to close the gaps between the balloons. But maybe there is some kind of inter-leaving of ballons of different diameter that could be used outside the hammock.
It is an idea that is almost surely more hassle to use than it is worth in weight savings, but sort of a fun idea to kick around...

The BalloonBed looks like a great project...but if I made it...I would either have more cells in the nylon or something...it looks like there's a good bit of room between each balloon that would allow for cool spots during the night...but I do think it's a great idea that could be look into futher.

I don't see how the baloon idea would be superior to one of the inflatable pads. I've got a big agnes insulated air core, and matching bag, it works great. I sure could tell a difference in warmth when I let out the air the next morning!
Wouldn't a premade pad also remove the need for replacement baloons?
it's all about weight.
I can imagine ginning up a balloonbed that fits in a double-layer hammock, where the balloons are held together by strips somehow, spaced along the length. Grams rather than a pound (for an inflatable pad) for this insulation.
How well it would work is a matter to be experimented with...

Agreed. There is always room for improvement. Maybe you could try fabricating a intergrated system. Use a thin plastic and a bag sealer to weld the two halves making chambers, and make it the size of the hammock sleeve. Would take a lot of work, but pry the lightest way to do it.
