    Any opinions on this tarp?

It's meant for canoeing, but it is roughly 9x12'. It's urethane coated polyester so compared to silnylon it should be more waterproof but not as wear resistant?

It's 2x as heavy as the hennessy at 2 lb but that's quite a bit lighter than a tent!

I'm thinking about buying it for the price point.

Probably more wear resistant and potentially stronger than silnylon. There is some strength in the layer of urethane plus it may be on a heavier gauge material than silnylon. I have yet to hear about misting with urethane coatings. The only down side is weight. If I'm wrong I'll find out soon. ;-)

A friend of mine owns this tarp and we took it out to Algonquin for a double nighter a few weeks back. Big tarp with lots of coverage. Heavy and strong material but it was heavy. I do remember that he did like it - especially the burnt orange - but would look into a sil version to help with the weight in the future.

with a canoe or kayak - i can't imagine you would notice the weight as much so much more of a score in that department.

I can say that MEC branded products tend to be pretty well made.

What Membership required? And shipping? Price just goes up and u0p. Anyone know if any american companies sell a similar tarp?

EDIT: Chinook seems to make something similar, can be bought at sears:

BAM Found a link on HF; I really should do more searching. I will be ordering the chinook shortly.

    less expensive option

For a bit less at $35, there's the MEC Scout Tarp. It's 6.5 x 9.5 ft and weighs 700g (24.5 oz), made of polyurethane-coated ripstop polyester fabric

The question is, would it be large enough? What do you guys think? How about the weight, is this a good weight for that size and price or is just too heavy. Cubin is light but just too darn expensive for my budget.

MEC is a co-operative where members can participate and contribute. The $5.00 fee is a lifetime membership (got mine almost 20 years ago). Unfortunately we have some higher sales taxes than other Provinces and States. MEC makes excellent products but you'd save some money buying something similar from a US retailer.

How about the size of this tarp, any opinions if it's large enough?
On the diagonal that would be 11.5 ft long. Is that good enough coverage?

11.5 is enough for ridgeline coverage. Because it is rectagular you'd have to align the coverage to your head and feet if you use it in Diamond configuration. I'd go with something a little bigger in case you have to use it in different storm conditions.

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if anyone has used the guides tarp over a hammock? They now have a sil nylon version which seems to be pretty cheap compared to other similar tarps. I was wondering if it might be large enough to cover two hammocks? I don't have a tarp at all yet so I'm looking for the best cost vs. weight solution for my boyfriend and myself.

I have the smaller scout tarp and love it, I used it instead of the stock Hennessy tarp from almost day one. I just recently upgraded to a cat cut tarp, but still keep the scout in my boat for those rain showers that pop up at the most inappropriate times and to have as a second tarp in camp if necessary.

A MEC membership is only $5.00 for life. Lots of savings on gear, but quite frankly, I still order most of my stuff from the US and have it shipped to the border for pick up. Your prices down there are phenominal!
