I've used my hammock for the last half dozen camping trips we did. My son has brought his to use for a couple. Some boys bought hammocks at summer camp. One adult still insists his fishnet hammock is better (But he was not in it at 19 degrees like I was in mine!)

Check out harrell79cj5's post today. Sounds like a great way to get them hanging on the cheap.

I had a good time making them jealous when we set up in the rain or in a horse camp with ploppers everywhere. Then I taught them to sew as we made hammocks for everyone. cheers

Thanks everyone for all the great info, I know that no matter what I do the boys will love it and if they don't I still will.

our scouts saw mine about 3 years ago at summer camp. the trading post had them for 20 bucks so a bunch of them bought them my son included, they are parachute nylon and hold 300lbs a bit short for a tall adult but a sturdy hammock. i thought it may be a bunch of old grand trunk hammocks as they just say travel hammock on them.here is a link they are up to 24 dollars now .this company supplies stuff for camps/trading posts to sell;..http://paulssupplies.com/index.php?m...roducts_id=454 one by one they are bringing them to camp outs to try and asking questions..i think they might be on to something. I have found that the "soft sell" method of my son and I just using ours at different camp outs has generated a good deal of interest in our troop. We have simply answered the natural questions that arise from others seeing our hammock rigs. I think that education about how to stay warm in a hammock is key. If their first experience is a freezing cold night they might think it's not a viable option. In fact, our introduction of hammocks into the troop has been a little too successful. There are some trips where we've almost had more hangers than trees.

Myself and my son are still at the Cub Scout level but as soon as he crosses over, hopefully I'll be able to start showing the Troop the "Path to Enlightenment".

    Getting the Scouts involved

RBDodger and I just took a patrol to the UP and did a canoe trip in the Sylvania Forest. We sat up out hammocks and the boys used a "Taj Majal" cabin tent. I posted a couple albums on my profile page.

By the end of the event they had their interest peaked.

"Just get 'em in the woods" is the easiest way to get Boy Scouts to do anything.

When I was a scout, at the beginning of every year we had a "how to pack" night for backpacking. Incorporate hammocking in this meeting, along with the standard tent camping and you should be all set.
