Converting Big Agnes to Top Quilt

I've been thinking about converting my Big Agnes bag into a top quilt. Did some measuring today.. not sure if it will work.
Any one out there do this? How did it go? Enough coverage on top and sides? Weight savings?
    Thoughts? Pro's? Cons?
Any input would be appreciated. Don't want to start cutting till I get the research done.

    Thanks HF

    Jerry

I don't think the insulated portion of a BA is wide enough to make a good tq.

I just finished this with my EMS bag. Worked pretty good, just shook the down away from the zipper, stiched it up, cut the zipper off,cut the hood off, rolled the new seams, and saved about 7 ounces. I salvaged 1.5 ounces of 800+ fill down that I plan to make a pillow with. YMMV.

hummm,,,i can't bring myself to cut up one of my BA bags as they are so easy to sleep in,,just zip the bottom up as far as you want for a footbox and lay it over you,,and tuck around,,slept in one last week down to 30 degrees in a more than 40mph wind and was toast!! With a very great bottom AHE NR UQ under me and tarps were about 8 inches off the ground with the wind whipping all around me and the wife. I will buy TQ before I hack a BA up..I really think you have better coverage with a great TQ from one of the cottage makers here on the forum.

I have a Cross Mountain 40 and a Gunn Creek 30. I think they are both pretty easy to use as is, but I agree that they would be plenty wide as a quilt. With the Cross Mountain, I just leave about 2 feet zipped and use it as a quilt. The really thin layer that is supposed to go under you just gets pushed off to the side. It is so small, I don't even notice and I have plenty of width. I try to get in the Gunn creek a little more like you are supposed to, so the hood and draft collar line up right. I don't bother to zip it up, however. The full length draft tube makes a good seal against the edge of my underquilt. I'm pretty satisfied with it w/o modifications.

I have a NA lost ranger 15 degree bag I've considered cutting up, but not sure it'll come out right. Probably just going to sell it and put towards a burrow!

I have a BA Lost ranger as well... Have never used in my hammock in cold weather. Aside from being trapped in a sleeping bag, doesn't the lack of insulation on the back make the BA like a top quilt? Am curious if anyone has tried a BA with an under quilt? Is it warm enough?

I use my BA like a TQ. Similar to those above. I have a left zip model and have zipped it in upper 30'sF. Warm and toasty with my UQ.
