    Testing the waters: Hiking Poles

I would love a good set of hiking poles, but I can't bring myself to spend 100 bucks on a set. Could anybody cut a good deal on a set?

I've read that a few folks use Walmart hiking poles with good results.

I have the mountain hardwear ones. Got them at Academy outdoor for $20-ish for the pair. Twist to collapse or lengthen. Anti shock. Good sticks so far. My only complaint is the wrist strap is kinda basic, but they were only $20-ish so what do you do?

Good idea, or go to a golf shop and see if they will give you a couple of old shafts with the grips still on. Put rubber feet on them and get after it.

These are probably the best bang for the buck. They are not the cheapest and not the very lightest, although they are about half the weight of the WM ones. And they are very durable. You would have to spend big bucks to get lighter than these and you would be using carbon fiber poles which are not as robust. There are raving reviews of these on BackpackingLight.

MAD777-- That outfit is in Great Britain. Might take while to get them here, just saying. anytime they say order by 3 PM GMT, it sets off bells in my head.

Here's a pair at a good price with cork grips and "power/lever locks", the two requirements I was looking for to replace my old pair.

I love all the responses especially since I have previously only hiked sans poles.

I went to REI a couple of weeks ago and had the same thought about dropping a hundo on a pair that I don't have any experience with. They had a set of
Black Diamond jr poles for $49. I'm only 5'2", so I thought, why not?

I have used them on two hikes so far.

    So far, so good.
Don't like the wrist things at all.
    (can't find a link , otherwise I'd post it)
