    Sewing my own tree straps

I am wondering if my standard sewing machine is strong enough to sew loops in my own tree straps? Anyone have any thoughts/info about this?

My little Brother electronic machine had no problems either. You will want a heavier needle than usual though. At least a 14 or 16.

If you are going to be sewing loops in webbing, there is some additional info in the pdf linked to in this thread:
    http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=27971

Here is direct link, to save time:
    http://www.caves.org/section/vertical/nhback/NH03.pdf

It discusses different sewing pattern methods and strength rates of each, for sewing loops in webbing. It does say nylon webbing, but considering it's the stitching that's being tested I don't think that matters too much.

and... yes regular machine worked fine here as well on 1" polyester webbing using gutermann upholstery thread.

    DIY straps

I used a universal needle to put loops on a set of straps with just nylon thread, and it worked fine.

Found some truck tie downs at HD took them home, cut off the metal rachets, and sewed away. They are 1" desert camo. Have since seen some which are jungle camo, (nuts) hope the desert camo does not stand out too much in the woods. ($15) Camo obsession you know.

Follow Eron's link to the info on how to sew straps, and do what it says.

Who knows but I didn't do it...

What was your controversial comment about needles?

i asked if, wouldn't it be appropriate to use a ball-point needle for sewing straps. mind you, i was just asking as a person who was unfamilier with sewing, but was trying to get some understanding of the process. thank you hppy, but there's no need to work on this. in retrospect i guess i shoulda launched a new thread instead of asking on this one
