    Kid friendly suspension

    Hello all,

I'm looking to simplify the suspension on my son's Hennesey. He's 11, a scout, and frequent camper. I hoping I can save him some weight, and time in setting up his rig. Plus, I'm looking for a reason to monkey around with his hammock.

I've read quite a few threads regarding suspension modifications and watched quite a few videos on YouTube(hat tip to Hawk-Eye, Shug, and Dutch among others), but I don't have any hands-on experience with slings, rings, or clippin' things. I'm pretty sure I could figure it out, but I want to hear from you guys.

So, if you were an 11 yo, which setup would you prefer? His goal is to hang his rig as quickly as possible and get down to the business of scoutin' around. Also, if I switched to DG or Amsteel whoopies, will the prussik knot from the tarpline hold or should I consider a new way to hang the tarp?

    Thanks.

Whoopies. Don't know about the tarp though.

    Good question....

I think for simplicity I would go with the continuous suspension from JRB or similar. Take a look on their website. You end up with a suspension that's completely attached to the hammock so there's nothing to lose or leave behind. Simply wrap the strap around the tree and attach with a dutch clip, adjust the whoopie and you're done. I can't think of anything much easier.

I put prussic knots (actually klemheists) on the "fixed" side of the whoopies I installed on his expedition. I put a loop of bungee on the end connections. These soak up some of the sag you normally get with the HH tarp when you hop in the hammock. They hold the tarp OK but a separate ridgeline or other cords would hold more securely.

My son's only 7 so the chances of him rigging the suspension solo right now is about zero. I've been working with him a bit on tying the marlin spike hitch but that's pretty tough (doesn't tie his shoes yet).

I'm not sure how much weight it would save, but the straps and cinch buckles that Warbonnet uses and Paul @ Arrowhead also offers is pretty darn easy. Get a couple of Dutch Clips for the webbing and it doesn't get much easier or quicker.

If you are looking for easy I would go for the webbing suspension from AHE. If you want light and almost as easy, I would go with whoopies and smart outdoors elephant trunks, and for the tarp a continuous tarp ridgeline with a dutch hook/flyz.

I would switch it to a webbing suspension! The tarp would need either a continuous ridgeline (my personal preference) or single lines!

+1 on the webbing like Warbonnet uses. Attach with a load bearing carabiner and you're set. It takes longer to take the hammock out of the stuff sack than to hang it up.

Whoopies are awesome and easy. Given that your son is a Scout he would probably enjoy the opportunity to make his own following some of the great tutorials that are available online (particularly here in the forum).

    hmmk: adjustable webbing - http://warbonnetoutdoors.com/acces.php

tarp: 2 12' lines with prussik loops girth hitched to the tarps ridge line rings (think stock HH tarp setup but with separate lines)

this has been the easiest i've come across
