Question How can I determine the weight of my fabric?

... as a noob here in the DIY world, I have a question that might be silly, but I beg your indulgence:

I found a great deal on some ripstop nylon for a hammock, but the seller had no idea what the weight was. I bought enough to double it up, if necessary, but I would like to determine the weight so I know if it's necessary or not.

How is this done, short of cutting off a square yard and weighing it (or a sq. ft and multiplying)?

For that matter, how much will each weight of ripstop hold? I'm bigger inna middle'n I usedta be... pushing 230 lbs now, so would I need to double even the 1.9oz? Would a double 1.5oz dump my fat butt on the ground?

Not to be a wise guy but remember you bought it by the linear yard and you want to measure weight by the square yard...

Roger that - I'll measure both ways and do the math. Thanks for the reminder.
