Possible double use for tree straps?

Could I use my 1/2" webbing as a makeshift compression strap for my rucksack? I use a variety of stuffsacks to loose pack my rucksack, but because the backpack itself is pretty light on compression straps it doesn't compress the total volume down all that evenly - the pack sort of puffs out in the middle.

Think I can use my straps with some sort of friction slipknot to squeeze in my packs gut?

It might require a little sewing to put loops in place to keep the webbing from sliding off to one side or the other, but I see no physical reason why not. If it works for you, go for it! (Oh, and post photos so the rest of us can crib your notes .)

Should work well. In the old days, we used to lash packs etc... to our external frames with either webbing or rope. I cannot see why this method could not also work to compress a frameless or internal frame pack. The only drawback might be the straps right against your back. Not sure if that would create a comfort issue.

Just days before I left on a solo wilderness canoe trip I converted my blackbird so that the suspension straps would disconnect from the hammock. I was entering questionable weather and was planning on having soaking tarp and straps that I wanted to pack separately to keep the rest of my gear dry. It was a good thing I did ......

during a rain storm on one of my portages one of my old wet shoulder straps broke, then the other right after that. I was only a 100 yards from the next body of water so I double portaged the gear and boat and took off paddling.

I now had time to think about what I was going to do and how to repair my pack and keep going. yeah, those suspension straps came to the rescue! The straps now had double duty, as shoulder straps by day, and hammock suspension straps by night. I was only 1/2 way thru my 3 day trip when this happened and while I was now close to where I could call for retrieval I was now able to tough it out and complete the rest of the miles and miles worth of portages still yet ahead.

While I cringe at the thought of carrying extra weight, I was glad I had my carabiners with me for my suspension straps and not the dutch clips.

This is what my rig looks like, it's not normal hiking by any means! Total weight on my back is 75 lbs. my longest single carry was 3.5 miles
