    OES 11'x10' vs Warbonnet Superfly

    Hi all,

I am a complete hammock noob and I think I am intending to get the WBBB DBL 1.1 soon based on all the recommendations, videos and threads I have seen.

Originally I was looking at the WB Superfly but then I discovered a lot of you use OES tarps. I looked at the MacCats and am tempted by the simplicity but also want to compare apples with apples here. The 11'x10' 'winter tarp' by OES is similar in dimensions as the Superfly except the doors does not overlap or protrude out and can be strung up as a rectangle. There is also the option to add panel pulls to match the Superfly and even ridgeline loops for more versatility.

The OES seems to have a lot of colour options whereas the Superfly is 'olive brown' which I am wondering if that is what Brandon describe as an olive grey on the webpage. For the OES colours, would a black be too hot or it actually provides better shade? Otherwise I will most likely go the grey as I am quite used to that as a tent fly colour.

Thoughts for and against each option and ultimately what is a better purchase?

    Thanks in advanced

Or should I just get a MacCat Standard or Ultra?

Both are great tarps so get one of each. You can never have too many tarps

I know its not an OES or WB, but check out the Wilderness Logics line-up.

I have been impressed with his gear to date and should have one of the Old Man Winter tarps in my hands early this week.

Both guys make top quality stuff. Go with whichever one is most appealing to you... features, size, price or even simply the color choice.
Between those two, there is no wrong choice.

Yes in an ideal world you would have it all, wouldn't you?

Let me refine the question a bit more. How do the OES winter tarp 'doors' work when they don't overlap. Is that adequate protection? Also thoughts on colours please.

Being that shipping will be much more for you. I would just go with the Superfly.
You get plenty of tarp and coyote brown looks really cool in my opinion.

the 10' x 12' OES when lowered almost to the ground,,you CAN close it completely as Brian puts 5 tie outs on each side,,and it will work perfectly closed to any size hammock. I have one and have used it completely closed before,,doors go alittle inward but you still have plenty of space and with tie outs on the sides even more room..works like a champ!

I love my Cooke Custom Sewing tarp
When it seems like the night will last forever
And there's nothing left to do but count the years
When the strings of my heart start to sever
And stones fall from my eyes instead of tears
I will walk alone by the black muddy river
And dream me a dream of my own

A big fan of Cooke Custom here, too. Lots of options with all the tie outs. They aren't cat cut though, so its a little tougher to get them taut. Dan's tarps are popular with paddlers and Minnesotans.

That said I also have a Superfly and now an OES winter. I think it would be hard to go wrong with either. They both have their pros and cons.
