    Hey from New Brunswick

Hi, my name is Dan and I have a problem with hammocks. I've been two days without sleeping in mine... Wait, wrong opener, let me start again.

Hi, my name is Dan, I'm from New Brunswick, Canada. I enjoy camping, hiking, dirt bikes, photography, and sharing these interests with my wife and our two children. I presently have a HH Ultra lite with a standard tarp, standard suspension. I love the hammock, it fits me well.

I'm planning to purchase a HH typhoon tarp in the 70D poly version; I figure I'd rather have the no stretch when it's really raining vs the extra 3 oz of weight (plus the price difference will buy me more gear right?). I can always leave the doors at home if I don't expect needing them, saving some weight.

This winter I plan to take my hammock snowshoeing so I can go further than what I can safely shoe to and back in a day. That being said I have to come up with an underquilt and for now I'm leaning towards a DIY old sleeping bag conversion.

I'm also in the market for some other gear and was wondering if anyone could give me personal feedback from their on experience with these items:

    Trangia mini stove
    Black Diamond Speed 30 backpack

Yeah, I'm trying to save weight. I'm hoping to do a 3-4 day hike with a pack in the 20-25lb range next spring/summer with some camera gear.

    Welcome Dan
Just came back from visiting Moncton, NB for Thanksgiving; very nice place. Beautiful leaves.

I have the Speed 40 pack. It's a better size, I think, than the 30 for overnights and short trips. I have a 30L Genie pack from MEC, but couldn't fit all my gear (hammock, tarp, topquilt, bottom quilt, raingear, cookkit, and food)in it without really squishing things,(and I'm fairly lightweight), so i started looking for a comfortable 40 L pack. The Speed 40 was the most comfortable of all the packs I could find, and I tried a lot of them. Cut off the ice axe loops and extra webbing, interior bladder holder, etc to trim a few ounces.

I have a Trangia burner and like it a lot, (burns efficiently, works well with its pots and windscreen) but it's heavy. I don't have the miniTrangia, but i think the burner is the same. Fine for canoe-camping or car-camping, but for backpacking there are lighter options out there. Do a search for Trangia in the forum and you'll get lots of hits, i'm sure. happy trails

Hi from the other side of the world (or at least the continent) on Vancouver Island.

I'm looking at alcohol stoves myself but are you just heating water (or whatever) for yourself or a few of you? My impression is that 6 minutes for 2 cups of water might not hack it for a group situation.

Hello Dan! I'm from St Stephen NB and do a fair bit of hanging here. I also have a wife and two kids and have had them all on a hang with me at one point or another. The trangia is a great stove and I have used the same one for 22 years with no trouble. The mini is a good size for 1-2 people and a perfect size for the pack. Diy underquilts are a great way to get started and not hard to make from a sleeping bag and I still get use from the first one that I made. Good luck getting your gear together and look forward hearing more.
