Hello from Victoria on Vancouver Island...

    Hello Everyone,

I'm absolutely new to hammock camping, so I'm looking for information.

I'm a solo canoeing again after a hiatus of decades, and I've noticed that sleeping on the ground isn't as easy, fun, or romantic as it was when I was younger. (I'm 60 now and a grandparent!)

What is it like to sleep in a hammock? For me, that is the critical question. A good night sleep is everything - even if your not camping. A silly and obvious question I know, but if forum members could write about their experiences sleeping in a hammock versus a tent I would be most grateful.

If there are any hammock users in Canada, or in BC, on on Vancouver Island I would particularly love to hear from you.

    Cheers,
    Coffeedrinker

    Heavenly...

Seriously, there's a significant lack of stiffness in the morning.

It's true, because there's no pressure on my shoulders or hips I wake up with no stiffness at all. No doubt everyone here will tell you the same thing...

In comparison I went camping in my tent a couple of weeks ago and was no where near as comfortable and woke up a bit stiff and not feeling as refreshed as if I'd been in my hammock.

Hello and Welcome to the HF from Ontario!

I found a great way to get my feet wet was to order a Grand Trunk UL hammock (currently on sale at Amazon.com at just under $13.00) to get a feel for it all.

Welcome to the forum. You might want to check in with
    www.westcoastpaddler.com
Not only for route info but there are a number of folks in and around victoria who hammock camp and can not only tell you where the good hanging spots are around the Gulf Is. but also you might arrange for a test run. Its mostly a kayaking site and good folks. As for me its more comfortable than on the ground, there's generally more places to hang and more fun as well. When and if you get a hammock go for something with a side zipper and also a little bigger like The HH Deep Jungle,Warbonnet Blackbird,Etc. Its in the canoe so a little extra weight ,(few oz's), won't matter. You'll find all the info you'll need on this site.
BTW you'll want a bigger tarp like The warbonnet superfly etc because of the wind/rain on the coast and an underquilt keeps your butt warm.

It is an amazing difference. I agree with getting a cheaper hammock and try it out. Or even better read out DIY section and build your own. You can always upgrade later.

    Thank you!

    Hello Everyone,

Thank you for the warm welcome! I think I have much to learn. Who knew there were so many different kinds of hammocks and tarps available. It's like a
    parallel camping universe!
