A pad INSIDE a bergen style rucksack?

So while I still on a hunt for a WBBB, i've been looking at getting ad different sleeping pad than the one I have (thermarest ridgerest). It's just too bulky, and I have a Berghaus Vulcan on the way. The sleeping pad wouldn't fit too well on the outside of the ruck, so I was thinking about getting one of the more foldable pads so I can pack it away inside.

Would just like your thoughts on what might be the best/cheapest idea?

I've looked at the german folding sleeping mats, but can't find any decently priced ones in stock anywhere.

When I still carried my Alps Mountaineering CCF pad, I lashed it horizontally to the bottom of my pack. I found that it helped lift the pack slightly off of my shoulders if I would stop for a quick rest break at a conveniently placed boulder. Just sit down, and the pad will lighten the weight if you don't want to fully take your pack off.

The other option is to line your pack with the CCF, and stuff all of your gear inside the loosely rolled pad.

Oh wow, I JUST realized how I screwed up on the title... Gah!

****A pad it fit INSIDE a bergen style ruck!

Stang, do you use a bergen then?
I actually never even thought of strapping it to the very bottom. It could work... I'll test that out when me pack arrives, and see how it goes.

I haven't technically used a Bergen, but I've used both an ALICE and a MOLLE when I was in the military, which are similar in that they are "tactical" packs. I used a standard issue CCF pad. In the ALICE, it was easier to strap the pad to the top, under the top panel straps. On the MOLLE, it was easier to strap it to the bottom, or line the main ruck with it. Most "tactical" packs have tons of attachment points for everything from additional pouches, to radio carriers, to grenade holders, so you get familiar with varying ways to outfit your pack. The only concern would be bushwhacking...then you want as much as possible on the inside of your pack in order to prevent getting hung up on branches.

A CCF pad is durable and waterproof, so there was no need to waste valuable pack space by putting it inside. We're already carrying an average of 80lbs. of gear though, so a 10oz. CCF pad wouldn't make a difference is it was strapped to our thighs
