Go for it! I didn't know a thing about sewing, nor did I have anyone around me who did.
I just went to WallyWorld and bought the cheapest machine they had and started experimenting with scraps of fabric. I found out that it's not all that complicated. It just take a bit of patience. For camping gear, it doesn't have to look good (thank goodness!) it just has to function, and it's pretty easy to get to that point.
I whole heartedly recommend RamblinRev's video series on sewing! I wish I had the benefit of that before I started.

My first experience with making stuff with a thread injector was a custom motorcycle seat. I made a chopper style seat for my Indian. I used my (first) wife's sewing machine. I was sewing through about four layers of naugahyde when sewing the welted seams. Shortly after I got it finished, a plastic gear in the machine broke in half and fell off.
I am married again. I have my very own thread injector which I bought at a rummage sale. I am contemplating stitching up a gathered-end hammock tonight. I bought the black ripstop on the way home from work today. You can use the SWMBOs machine for the lightweight stuff with no risk. If you try stitching through several layers of industrial stuff or upholstery, get your own.
I had never sewed a thing in my life. I bought a machine on Craigslist and brought it home. After figuring out how to thread the machine and do some minor adjustments, I did a few practice stitches on a piece of ripstop. I swear, within 30 minutes, I was knee deep into making a ridgeline organizer. It turned out great! After a few projects now, my wife tells me my daughter wants me to fix a pair of her pants. Sorry, I gotta draw the line somewhere. My manhood is at stake.Bottom line, just crank up that darn thing and start injecting!
