I am still looking for a good crochet hook to use as a fid.

I had a hard time at first and found I wasn't finessing it enough and milking it as I went. But then on Beep's recommendation I bought a Loop Turner and it made it even easier. I found mine at WalMart for about 3 bucks in the sewing department.
