Looking for Tahoe Rim Trail info

    Good Evening,
Some ground dwelling friends of mine made a big excursion along the JMT earlier this year. Now they're hooked on west coast hiking. Now they've got a big trip planned next summer to thru-hike the Tahoe Rim Trail.

I think there are a couple of members on here that are familiar with that area. I'm assuming that due to the altitude (above treeline ) that this really isn't the best area for hammocking. I can always revert back to ground dwelling but I really don't want to.

Any recommendations? Anyone have a trail report to share?? Any/all info welcome.

    Thanks,

One of the magazines had a Tahoe Rim Trail thru hike story, I'm thinking it was either Outside or Backpacker, maybe 1-2 years ago. You may be able to find the story online.

Here's a few links that I've collected. The TRT looks like a great hike.

    Tahoe Rim Trail Association

    Pmags Thru-hike Journal

    Backpacking Light TRT Photo Journal

I actually e-mailed Pmags and asked him whether he thought the trail could be hammocked. He was pretty sure it could be done, as long as you didn't plan to spend a night near any of the higher passes. It might lead to a shorter or longer day, but there were always trees fairly close by.

Another consideration is water. You may have to cache some water on the south-east portion, depending on the rainfall situation.

4th of July weekend I ended up on part of it, where it goes along with the PCT from Echo Lakes to Lake Aloha (Trip Report). There are some tree-less areas, but there are still a lot of trees.
Google Earth does a good job showing the barren areas. My first day was planned to be 26 miles, because there seemed to be very few trees between ****'s Lake (mile 10) and Richardson Lake (mile 26). Actually, right now Google Earth shows images from June 14th of this year and you can see why my trip stopped early lol.

I've never been on the Nevada side, but the CA side spends quite a bit of time below the tree line.
