    Pad inflation

Just purchased a trail lite pad from a member here and so far I have to say it makes the hammock hurt my back. Not sure why but I'm not as comfortable laying on the pad. With that said how deflated can I go before I lose insulation properties.

Technically, I believe you lose some insuluating capability for even the slightest deflation. That said, I believe you should inflate only about halfway to maintain the comfort you seek (or close to it).

Yeah I am using the pad about 50% inflated and it seems to be more comfortable. I am using this pad for an upcoming camping trip that will be in the low 40s at night. Hopefully I'm warm enough with this pad and a 20 kelty cosmic bag.

I don't use a pad anymore but when I used a thermarest, I left the valve open. That was the only way I could get comfortable. I still had plenty of insulative value.

I have used an exped DLX9 inflated about 1/3 of the way in between the layers of my DD hammock and was quite comfortable and warm around 0*C. I did wake up early because I had snow falling on my face.

I sleep hot as hell anyways. I should be just fine. Honestly I didn't have any doubts until I started reading this forum. Seems most people use much more insulation than I'm planning for these temps.
