long term sleeping in a hammock?

im a brand new member, this is my first post, thanks for the hospitality.

me and my brother just bought a house, a foreclosure. He makes mad money but i, unfortuantly, dont.

I could pull the bed from my parents house/current room and put it in my new room but i dont really want to, which is where the question comes in, and you guessed it: Can i hang a hammock in my room and just sleep on that?

I asked a paintball forum this same question and people said after 2 weeks i'd wake up looking like a banana, something i dont want to do. Is there a type of hammock that i could hang to prevent this or is this totally out of the question.

Im defiantly going for the pirate flare. If you watch the Pirates movies you can spot them sleeping on hammocks and hey, if they did it (theoretically), cant I?

and btw, the house is in a neighboring city of Palm Springs, CA. almost 1,500 sq ft. Pool, Jacuzzi, Fireplace. we got it for 185. Shizam!

I've been sleeping in a hammock on my diy frame for 3 months now. Beats my futon, the canvas I made it out of has stretched a little... I should make one out of a tighter weave, and something wider than 60" might be better

i've been sleeping in a hammock since early 2005 & i don't look like a banana... i don't think<G>.
as you read here, you'll find that you can sleep near flat or perfectly flat, depending on the hammock you choose & how you use it.
part of it depends on the hammock design & part of it on the way you hang it.

any hammock that is comfy for one night will be comfy for many nights. if i was single i would sleep in one every night too. several here do.

try a hammock like the eagles nest double or the trecklight double, or get a good mayan hammock with a fine weave. at least 60" wide x 9-10 feet long would be fine. hang it with lots of sag (so the support lines are aprox. 45 degree angle) then to avoid the banana position, lie diagonally rather than straight, this allows you to lie quite flat, and is the reason you need the 60" or more width. you might try putting a small pillow under your knees if you feel there isn't enough support there, and maybe a very small travel or neck pillow for your head. a regular bed pillow will be way too big, and some don't need a pillow at all.

you can look at the manufactuers section of this forum to find eagles nest, trecklight and others. go for it, i wake up less times throughout the night in my hammock than i do on my memory foam matress.

yeah as slowhike might tell you, you can lay straight rather than diagonal, but you have to hang the hammock very tightly rather than very loosely. most hang loose (lots of sag/45 degree support ropes) and lay diagonally, but if you do want to try laying straight, you will have to hang the hammock differently to do so (much tighter)

yeah, i do use one of the thicker inflatables & use it only partly inflated.
i think that only plays a part in "flat sleeping" by fine tuning it after other measures have been taken...
1)... lots of sag & laying on the diagonal, or
2)... a tighter hang that stretches the hammock closer to strait.
the tighter hang does put a lot more stress on the hammock & it's supports as well as the attachment points (trees, eye bolts, or whatever).
and when i'm on my back, i still find myself using some "diagonal" in my lay sometimes.

yeah, but that doesn't make it flat, it's like that anyway. try hanging with fairly little sag and laying mostly straight, you will see. you get the least shoulder squeeze this way too, it's a different feeling, definately worth trying.

Full time hammock sleeper since Feb. of 07 and LOVING IT! I love having my back and knees NOT hurt in the mornings. Look at some of the Brazillian hammocks, they are uber comfy for nightly sleeping.

this sounds awesome. Im gonna have to look in the room again and figure out how im going to do this but it defiantly sounds possible and im stoked on that.
