Can someone suggest a few car camping places that are hammock friendly in So Cal? My girlfriend is looking to try it out but doesn't want to do any backpacking yet. She is pretty set on cleveland national forest but if there is any other good sites for November in San Bernardino or Los Padres I could probably talk her into it as well.

Holcomb valley in big bear is nice. $18.00 a night. Nights will be down in the 30s in Nov.

This is a google docs spreadsheet I started for people to add places to hang in southern california. There are lots of places just outside LA. If you want to see some really cool stuff check out fraiser mill campground on the list. this is a large sequoia grove that is free car camping. My favorite camp site ever. there are a ton of places closer though.

Because you fall through the clouds if you try to lay on them, so the next best thing is a hammock.

Leo Carrillo, Coldbrook, Crystal Lake, and a few others come to mind. I would suggest Chantry Flats (Hoegee and Sprucegrove) but those require you to hike at least 3 miles to get to camp.
Check out this trip report. About 20+ years ago I used to hike here. Very nice.

At the base of Mount Baldy, there's an access road at the east end of the ski lift parking lot. Hike up about 30 to 45 yards at what seems like a 45 degree incline, there is a little clearing with spaced out trees. My friend and I camped here overnight waiting for our friends the next morning to hike up to the summit.
I hung in my HH while my friend was on the ground. Bring long straps though. The trees are pretty wide and quite spread apart, depending on which trees you choose to hang from, of course.
You can camp anywhere on the mountain free of charge, the ski lift parking lot is free, you can see your car from the camp site (depending on where you choose to park, which really isn't far at all) but you can't have open fires. Stoves are okay.
Another place that I've hanged is the Upper San Juan Campground in the Cleveland Nat'l Forest. You might have to slowly cruise around for a suitable hanging spot though. I forgot how much it was per car, per night. I think like 12 bucks or something. It's right off the 5 on the Ortega Hwy, past Caspers right before the Ortega RV campgrounds. Really easy to miss on the windy road.
