well, i just made this and i'm gonna try it out tonight! it is supposed to be 20 degrees with rain/snow/sleet...so wish me luck!

i will be wearing/using the following:

Columbia long underwear pants and shirt
Fleece sweater
Fleece pants
Fleece hat
wool socks
Military surplus that is rated down to 10 degrees
my new "thermo pad" that i just made

the new pad is simply a blue sleeping pad that i picked up at walmart for $5 and one emergency/space blanket that i got for $2. all i did was trim two corners of the pad and wrapped it up, and then duck taped it.

i'll let you know how it goes!

that's interesting. should be pretty warm.
let us know how it goes, not only if it keeps you warm but how well does it pack, how well does the space blanket hold up when being used, & do you get any noticeable condensation problems.

is this a back yard test or in the woods?

ALL IS WELL!
This was a back yard test just to let you all know!
I slept very very comfortably from 12 am until 6 am...the only reason i woke up was due to the liter of gatoraid i drank before i went to bed!

Also, i used a fleece blanket ontop of my sleeping bag.
It got down to 20 degrees, it rained, sleeted, and snowed, with wind gusts to 25 mph.

I have not tested it's "packability" yet, i do know that i "thrashed" around a bit last night getting into my bag, getting the pad right, and getting my blanket over me and nothing ripped at all. I stayed so toasty warm! As soon as anypart of my body rolled off the pad it was freezing, as long as i stayed on there i was good to go. I just wish i had a wider pad though. i will see how good it rolls up, this thing worked great and was under $10!

I had absolutely no condensation what so ever.

The same system moved through here. I would have stayed home.
Keep experimenting and reading the forums, there is a lot of good info here.
You will be in good shape by the time you get to Rapid City.
Do what works for you and gleen what you can from the posts here.

every thing has it's pros & cons.
just decide what you can live with & what you would like to change.

I am thinking about buying another blue pad and cutting it in half length wise then ziptieing it onto both sides...to make sort of like wings...and then put more foil around it. this would be me a little more comfort i think...i'm just not sure about how packing it

haha, well thanks! i check on it's pack-a-bility and it is pretty decent! i think i'm going to put a few more strips of duck tape on there so it has less of a chance to rip. but it rolls up like any other pad...it should work great. I'm looking at making an underquilt though so i shouldn't need it.
