    Damaged Superfly

I ordered a Superfly at the beginning of the year and had it sent to somebody in the US to bring it to Germany later on. I just received it and found that somewhere on the way, somebody seems to have opened the parcel with a cutter and cut into the bag containing the tarp. The bag has a clean cut, the tarp itself is not that severely damaged: there is a scratch-like line, and a puncture at the end of the line. I could probably use it as is. If it's not heavily raining, I don't think it'll leak water. The puncture is between the tie-outs, so even if it leaked, it would hopefully not be a big issue.

    Questions now:

    1) Can I repair it?
    2) How do I repair it - liquid silicone as you use for seam sealing?
    3) Could the scratch have weakened the material enough so that there's a danger of it tearing in strong winds?

This really hurts. A note to Brandon: wouldn't it be possible to put a piece of cardboard under the place where the tape closes the box? Sure, people who order know what's inside and that you should be careful when opening the box - but customs and other people (I don't know who the careless person was) don't know and don't necessarily care. I think it's easy to prevent something like that. It hurts spending 130 USD on a tarp and receiving it damaged...

I would think a light stitching on the line even by hand,,then some silnet to seal as when it drys is super strong,,just be sure and stretch it out super tight to add the silnet and let it dry for 24 or so hours. Do you have a pic of the damaged area to look at?

What about covering the damage with some tenacious tape? It comes in various colors.

    That totally sucks big time.

I hope you get to sort it out quickly, One thing with Silnylon is it's one tough material. The silicon impregnated into the Nylon adds lot's of strength. What ever method you use to repair, I would use a layer of silicon over the repair.

you might try calling your german customs department, they might cover it. they should. you should ask them to replace it and see what they say.

I would, if I could be sure that it was them doing the damage. There were too many people involved in getting the tarp to me: I had the tarp sent to family in the US, who then had it shipped with friends by container, who then sent it to me. All because I wanted to avoid trouble with customs... The last couple of times I had orders sent directly to me, I had to drive 30 minutes to the customs centre, wait for 3 hours until the guys could be bothered, and then was charged surcharges because the customs declaration was incorrect (although this wasn't my fault!). Seems whatever I do, I'm out of luck. Next time I'll pay for a flight and pick up my stuff myself...

How about some of this stuff. It would be good to have for any future repairs as well.

    did it go through customs?

i don't see who would open it mid transit other than german customs, i don't think usps opens outgoing stuff, that's the job of the receiving country (i think)

the way to patch a silnylon tarp is to take a piece of the same material and glue it on there with pure clear silicone, should make a good permanent patch, don't think you'll find any adhesive other than silicone that will stick to it permanently. if you have access to silicone i can mail you a patch sized scrap (shoot me an email (not a pm) if you want me to send you some scrap.)

i say it's gotta be german customs that opened it.
