Greater Gainesville Gathering: 12/2 to 6/11 Florida Hang

So, after my bike & hike scout report trip, I'm amped to get a Greater Gainesville hang together. Would anyone be interested in a hang out at the Longleaf Flatwoods Reserve, just outside of Gainesville?

I'm thinking about doing a Sunday-Monday, but could meet folks on Friday or Saturday during the day for orientation and help pitching camp (I work at night those nights). If folks want to car camp, the campsite is about a mile from the parking lot and three-quarters of a mile from the closest access point (with no elevation change to speak of), so carrying gear in isn't too arduous.

It looks like the earliest weekend where the site is available is 12/2 to 5/'11. From there on, until the end of the year, it seems that it's available. Would anyone be interested in a December hang?

Average temps for the month run in the upper 60s for the highs and mid-to-low-forties for the lows, with very low precipitation. However, record highs get as high as 87 and record lows get as low as 13 in December. So, keeping an eye on the weather report is definitely indicated. Three-season gear should get you through, and getting to the parking lot is not difficult if bailing should become necessary.

So, whaddya think? Any preferences on dates?

I am out of the loop for several weeks after thanksgiving. Any chance we want to bump this up earlier?

Cool. We'll see what the general consensus is for that.

Unfortunately, no. According to the St. Johns camping reservation site, the Reserve is booked every weekend up until December. How many weeks are you likely to be out? I can work things so that it's later in the month, if that helps. I don't really want to run into January, since that starts to be close to the Ocala hang, but I could even do it on New Years' weekend (matter of fact, I have that Saturday off, since we close for the night, come to think of it...) if you want.

So, I was just informed by the wife that I have plans for the weekend of 12/9-12. Since she needs help with school stuff that weekend, I won't be able to do it on those dates.

Anything else in December is still on the table, though.

Sounds interesting but I'll just have to play it by ear. That time of year gets a little busy with holidays and family coming in from out of state.

Sorry to hear that. Well, I'll definitely be niccing for another hang by March or April, for certain. I'll let you know when that reaches the planning stages.

Roger that my man. How have ya been? Get that yak out? My buddy and I just went out in my new canoe on Saturday. Poor planning and no knowledge of tide tables earned us a 9-ish mile trek to the Nassau sound and back!
