    Finished! (DIY primaloft UQ)

So, yesterday, the last of my materials came in for my primaloft UQ. As soon as the little one was in bed, i was measuring and cutting. Thanks to my wife, that didn't take 4 days (as it would if i had been doing it by myself).

I decided to go with ~60x46" for the total dimensions. i was initially going to try for a differential cut with 48" on the bottom layer and 46" on the top, but i realized that i forgot to do the pleats after i finished the seam on the last of the 4 sides. i don't know that it would have made much of a difference anyways. from what i understand, primaloft is not quite as ornery as IX about having lots of airspace in between.

I used 2 layers of primaloft that i got from http://therainshed.com/. One layer was 3 oz the other was 4 oz so i have a total of 7 oz of primaloft sandwiched between two layers of 1.1 oz ripstop from http://www.diygearsupply.com/ Based on what i've read other places, i'm hoping this will get me down into the 20's. Does this sound about right?

it compresses pretty well. i made a stuff sack for it (don't know that i'll use the stuff sack though, because i kinda botched that part of the project) that's pretty tight, but i could compress it down more if i wanted to. it's probably a little bigger than a football in the stuff sack, but like i said, it can compress smaller.

This diy thing gets addicting. i'm sure this isn't the prettiest UQ out there, but there's something really satisfying about knowing that i made it. also learned several things that will make it much easier for next time. here's a couple pics (yes, it did happen)

    Looks good!
Going to order my stuff for one tomorrow.
Are you going to be able to test it out anytime soon?

I'm gonna try to set it up in the back yard tomorrow night. probably won't sleep overnight though, too many barking dogs hopefully i'll get on the trail this weekend for a real test, but that depends on my work schedule.

Did you quilt this at all or just sew it between 2 layers of nylon?

you might want to put a few quilting loops in it to keep the insulation from pulling away from each other.... and to keep it from bunching up from being stuff in a stuff sack over time
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

That's a beautiful quilt you've got there! Looks mighty nice from here. I'm loving that brown fabric, might have to get me some for my next whatever I make.
You should be just about right for a 20's quilt.

Looks great! I'm with PF on that nice brown color! I, too, was wondering about any quilting on the Primaloft. I've got a top quilt that I did Ray Jardine style with some quilting loops spaced out about every foot or so--seems to pack well and stay pretty even in terms of the insulation staying in one place. Let us know how it works for you.

Thanks. i was wondering about quilting loops. i meant to ask about it in the opening post, but it was around midnight and i was so tired i wasn't thinking straight. any suggestions on how to put quilt loops in it? do i need to use any special thread or can i just use the gutermanns thread that i used for the rest of the sewing?
