max thermo insul mat inside hammock?

Im camping this weekend, and want to try out the new hammock I made, can I use the max thermo inside with a Z rest underneath it?

then with a 20 degree bag, will I be warm at 30 degrees?

the insul mat is 2.5" thick.

I would usually sleep on the ground with 2 Z rests, and this 20 degree bag.
    ( and be warm enough)

never slept in a hammock, all this talk of being cold is scaring me!

I would think the insul mat would be enough for the bottom insulation but a test in the backyard may answer the question better! My neighbors think I am crazy because when the weather gets cold or bad I hit the hammock for a good nights sleep (test) !

You should be fine with that set up. Lower than 30 degrees IMO. Really should test at home first but you'd be fine regardless.
I remember a day years ago here in Georgia we had a temp reading of -5
I would love to test my gear out in that kind of weather.

I was warm down to 30 degrees with just a 2" Thermarest and a 20 degree sleeping bag. You should be good to go.

if i'm not mistaken, the insul mat is a lot like the big agness insulated air core & i begin to feel a little cool on bottom in the low 50s w/ the b.a. mat.
but that can be different w/ different people & different circumstances.
but if you need to, put the ccf pad on top of the insul mat.
like the others said, if you can test before hand, that would be good.

    thanks for the input!

Id like to test it, but its supposed to rain tonight, and im inside trying to sew my first tarp together!

If there is a chance that you guys think its warm enough, I think Ill be fine, Ill take my full and 3/4 Z rests, and have a second sleeping bag for back up ( car camping, NOT backpacking this weekend)

Now, to figure out the diminsions for a tarp to cover the hammock.
Ive read alot here, but there is alot still to read

    GREAT FORUM.

    thanks everyone!

I thought about that, then I remembered sleeping on this HUGE air mattress my wife bought us for car camping, its queen sized, and 14 inches tall.

we FREEZE every time we sleep on it.

I think we cant generate enough heat to heat that air space.

thats why I thought the insul mat, under me, and then the Z rest under the mat.

maybe my body can heat the insul mat if it is insulated from the bottom of the hammock?

Ill try it both ways and report back.

it's been a while since i looked at the insulmats. does yours have insulation in it?
if so, it may do ok, but you may have to use the ccf pad either on top of it or underneath.
but if your car camping, that's almost as good as testing in the back yard. like you said, take a couple back-up options to have near by.
let us know what it takes to keep you warm. ...tim

If it is car camping, then bring it. I used a 1/2 in. cc walmart pad to 30 degrees. Somewhere around there my butt got cold. Adding a sit pad there would have taken care of it. But I am a cold sleeper.

good idea on the butt pad.

ive got a 10x12 square of grey packing foam, weighs nothing, but about 3 inches thick.

its been my "seat" for a couple of years now, it lines the bottom of my pack.
Im also considering a length of reflectix to bring along.

I got an hour or so to play in the back yard tonight.

warmer than I thought, the insulmat was awkward though, too rigid, maybe with less inflation it would be better, the Z rests seemed warm, and with an older thermarest under me it felt down right cozy.

I am noticing the hammock gets tighter, and less coccoon like with the pads inside though, I think I understand the whole underquilt benefit now.
