I've used the group sites at Falls Lake (Rolling View) and it's got tons of hanging spots

I know most of the Jordan like campgrounds are closed - they leave 1-2 open in the fall ... you'd want to check wherever you are going first...

That said I like the idea... been wanting to take the Clark out in cooler weather and the kids have been bugging me to go camping

Ok so I'm going to be going out and scouting possible sites tomorrow and hope to get some pictures and possibly videos up of four possible locations. Currently I'm looking at Rolling View on Falls Lake, Parker's Creek on Jordan Lake, Cox Mountain at Eno River (walk/hike in), and William B Umstead in Raleigh.

So what I do know of the four spots is that Eno River and Umstead will provide the most number of trails to walk on. Falls Lake as access to the Fall lake trail which is part of the MST. I've never been to the Parker's Creek at Jordan Lake, but have heard good things about it.

Also in the spirit of full disclosure for anyone that may not know, Umstead is very close to the airport. So air traffic nearby is a strong possibility. Although I've never noticed it when out there hiking. Will make a more concerted effort tomorrow to listen for it.

Have not camped at Umstead since the late 60's (telling my age ). Would be interesting to see how its changed. Have hike much of the Eno and paddled parts of it before it became a park. Have never been to Falls Lake.

Another interested depending on when. Camp regularly at all of these locations and enjoy them all. If lake based I have a handful of kayaks that I am willing to bring along.

So got out to three of the four locations today. Wasn't able to make it by Eno.
So my initial impressions are at Umstead there was a constant hum of noise from the highway followed by the sound of an aircraft every 10 minutes or so. Lots of trails in the area, but their group sites seem to be cabin camping. Was a bit disappointed in that fact. Falls Lake and Jordan lake group sites are near enough identical that either location would work great with lots of hanging options, although Jordan lake seems to have a bit few saplings, but that could have just been my perception. Also Falls has the camp sites closer to the water from what I was able to see. What I do remember of Eno river is that they don't have the single large fire ring encircled with benches as the lake sites have (Jordan lake had the largest rings) that I can recall, could be wrong. Also Eno is primitive camping with a pit toilet and you have to pack in/filter your water, the lakes have potable water on site with functioning restrooms.

I took a few pictures, but they don't really show much difference between the Falls and Jordan lake sites. And I couldn't find any good group hanging locations at Umstead so I didn't take any photos there at all.

I have to say that right now, although I love Eno and Jordan lake my vote would be for Rolling View at Falls lake.

Picture of one of the campsites, they are pretty much all the same setup. Fire Ring with benches. A couple of grills and some picnic tables. That's Falls lake in the background through the trees.

Sounds like Falls Lake is the place to go.

Need to set a date for the hang and someone will have to step up and reserve the site.

Added a poll to the thread to help us lock down a weekend. So mark your preference. If you absolutely can not do one or all of these dates then speak up and if enough people can't do the dates then we will try another set.
