    Hangin' in Boston

    Hello all!

Figured it's time to join the forum after a few months of lurking. I purchased a HH Hyperlight & their "Supershelter" system last October and have gotten to using it a fair amount this summer, figuring out the in's-n-out's of the hammock lifestyle.

I'm in Boston, MA and have been doing most of my hammocking in the Whites. I got into it after sleeping in a standard hammock on a boating weekend with a buddy. I had the option of sleeping in the cabin or on the deck during a wonderful weather weekend in a standard rope hammock. After those few nights I looked into the hammock thing for my backpacking.

I'm one of those light/ultralight backpackers, and I'm currently really interested in the feasibility of hammocking through a New England winter where the temps can reach into the -30's. I'm hoping to learn how to make this a possibility with the right UQ/TQ/etc combination, along with whatever other methods would be needed.

I'm also looking to do the AT next year in my hammock, but that will depend on the (un)employment situation at that time. So I'll also be doing research on how to best accomplish that in the hammock.

So far the one thing I do know is my sewing machine will be getting some much needed use as I make myself some UQ's for various conditions, and attempt to get my hammock into the -30's.

Also, I'm a side/back sleeper, and for some reason find myself sleeping in the "fetal" position when in a hammock and finding it amazingly relaxing. Dunno if that's an oddity, but since I don't sleep like that in a bed...

Welcome aboard, -30 makes me run inside to hug my heater, but a few of our members go that low in the Winter time including the one and only Shug.

Welcome from 'Joisey. The Whites are beautiful hiking (used to live in NH) and I've experienced those temps on day hikes. Take a look at some of the trip reports/hangouts for the winter months that talk about those kind of temps. Some good down and/or synthetic insulation will be your friends.

    Hey! Welcome!

White mntn's are great. I hung around North Conway for a while. friends had a cabin there.

Good luck & have fun building an UL kit for sub freezing temps - I can be addicting!

Shug, I'll be searching for your posts on deep winter hanging! I'm starting to do research on making my own UQ and what else I'll need to do to stay warm.

    thanks all!
