    First Hang

Well I have been looking into getting a Hammock set up and wanted to try it before going out and spending around $400.00 on a Clark Hammock ( I thought that is what I wanted)

I am finishing up the I&M state trail nearby (60)mile trail length
So The last section I hiked I decided to Hammock Camp in a State Park near the Trail and I am HOOKED ON HANGING!

I purchased a ENO Double Nest with Slap Straps
    and used a Cheapo Tarp 8ft x 10 ft

Everything was great and I slept very comfortable
in my 20* mummy bag with a <40* low temps overnight
and the tarp kept me dry when the rain started at around midnight
    and lasted about an hour
    Nothing got wet

I will never Tent camp again if possible

I really thought that the ENO Double was comfortable and easy to set up
I will make or buy a bug net and still get a better tarp with lower weight
but probably go a little bigger and also convert to longer straps and possibly whoopies and a Structural Ridge line and an Underquilt for colder weather protection

My pack was Heavy (25lbs) I over Did It:scared
Walked 18 Miles the first Day and 12.5 the second Day

I like my ENO DN. I'm new and still tweaking things myself. I just got a Gargoyle Gear Mega Ogee tarp that I really like. Again though, still tweaking.

I never tried the Slap Straps because of what I had read on here. Whoopies right off the bat for me and not looking back.

    By the way, welcome neighbor!

    thanks for the welcome

I am just starting to tweak

what length whoopies do you use? and what length webbing?

I did not have a problem hanging the hammock, but did see some areas that the slap straps and clips would not allow me to hang trees over 20ft apart

What is the furthest apart the trees have been for you?

My dream would be a cuben tarp (winter shelter like water monkey ordered)
but the cheapo tarp worked great (just Heavy) I carried it like a Bed roll on top of my pack and had my mummy bag rolled inside which worked great and kept the bag dry also

Did you had a structual ridge line and what did you use?

    thanks in advance

    Scott

Hey neighbors....okay you guys are a bit south of me but we are all in Illinois at least. I have a GT Single (just like an ENO single) and did my first hang last weekend at the Mississippi Palisades State Park...it was great.

Use descending rings attached to the cord on the hammock and run straps through them and around the tree....works great, fast to set up and adjust, and cheap. I also added a SRL which was a mystery to me until I added it...would never go without one now.

A buddy of mine and I are thinking about a winter hang somewhere in the midwest this winter. If you guys are interested let me know and I will get you the details.

I would be interested in a hang still need to get some gear together, but could be doing that soon

I actually am originally from Chicago I just camped at Illini State Park
but not sure if the Rangers at Ill parks would like or dislike Hammock Camping
I did not see anyone when I went camping I just paid the fee with an envelope and was gone by 7:30am the next Day so i did not see anyone before leaving either.

    STEALTH by accident

That is a lot of walking for a new hiker. How much experience do you have?

Not New to Hiking just New to Hanging

I have always enjoyed walking in the outdoors
but never really did a long distance multi day/week long hike

Did 75 miles in quetico (5 Days) but that involved canoeing and portaging.
Sort of a backpacking , hiking and a canoeing adventure all in one and I would suggest a trip like this to anyone who likes the outdoors and
    NO Humans!

first 4 days the only human I saw was my son who was with me on the trip

    Almost per SOLITUDE!

I'll answer to the best of my knowledge as I had a LOT of help getting set up.

Dutch set me up and if I remember correctly, it was 6' whoopies & 4' straps.

I did not have a problem hanging the hammock, but did see some areas that the slap straps and clips would not allow me to hang trees over 20ft apart

What is the furthest apart the trees have been for you?
I've only hung on two campouts so far with the furthest being approx 17'

My dream would be a cuben tarp (winter shelter like water monkey ordered)
but the cheapo tarp worked great (just Heavy) I carried it like a Bed roll on top of my pack and had my mummy bag rolled inside which worked great and kept the bag dry also

I have an adjustable that Dutch made me that I haven't taken the time to install. With working overtime, wife, two kids and scouts there's not alot of free time.

    thanks in advance
