Hammock Socks

My apologies for straying from the thread -

I am going to attempt a DIY of PapaSmurfs hammock sock but I also wanted to try another similar to the sock with a SEEP extension. Would anyone have an available template that I could possibly follow?

You are comparing an insulated sock to an uninsulated sock. I make them without IX, using 1.1 ripstop nylon, and they weigh about 9 oz.

I don't recommend using IX below freezing, even though many folks have done so without condensation problems, myself included. Several others have had condensation, so be careful!

I prefer the light weight, vapor permeable, uninsulated sock in cold conditions below 20*F.

There is more to it than just an overlapping cover... the lower portion is fitted using a dory style of construction.

Lightest I ever went was 6.52oz for a 99" x 48" that was used on a GT Ultralight.
I could probably hit 6.25 for a Nano Sock at 48" deep.

Rook - yours will be 94"-95 x 54" and weigh somewhere in the 6.5 ish neighborhood?
ShadowAlpha - yours will be 104" x 54" and weigh somewhere around 8 ish?

I never know for sure until I throw it on the scale before it ships out.

Absolutely! I didn't really clarify that in my previous post.

How would your sock work as a summer insulation method to replace a TQ and UQ? 26 oz would be lighter than most TQ/UQ combos, even at summer weights.

Absolutely right - it really is a great piece of constructed gear - you really do great work MacEntyre! Thought if I ever did attempt one, a template, for me, would be a necessity.

Works fine, and vents easily. Some people especially like the privacy!

Quick question, I am also considering getting a sock to extend my gear for this winter. I was just wondering if I could also use a UQP (1.1 or m90?) in conjunction with a BBO and get a similar effect? Obviously it wouldn't have quite the same seal as the sock, but I could use the different parts together or separately for different conditions. Thanks for the help!

That's what I do. breathable BBO and 2QZQ breathable UQP.

Using a HG winter 3/4 phoenix UQ, rei blowup foot pad for feet and a 5 degree sleeping bag I spent a nice warm night at -19.7F

My current setup if only for 3 season/20 degree, well thats what i think it is since its all DIY Both TQ and UQ are around 3in loft. I will be pushing its limits a little this weekend camping in CT on the AT. I am thinking about doing the Pine Barrens hang in January and i think the hammock sock would be the best/cheapest choice. I dont do any winter camping but i kinda want to try it.

Would a hammock sock with IX along the bottom be enough to get me down to "4 season" rating to do the Pine Barren hang???

One layer of IX in a sock should gain 20*F in the rating of your other insulation easily. It mitigates problems of fit by stopping all drafts, and holds a warm bit of air inside for you to breathe.

Just ordered two sock from MAC for Christmas gifts. Mac is wonderful and very patient. I know all my emails were a pain. LOL... Thanks MAC, I can't wait to try them out after Christmas. That is one package that will be hard not to open before Christmas.
