4 1/2 days, 109 miles on the AT

I was dropped off by my lovely wife just before Noon in Duncannon, PA. A short while later I had this great view:

I hiked 12 miles in to Darlington Shelter where I set up for the night.

I got up before sunrise and enjoyed a cool clear day of hiking, finishing off 26 miles later just across from Tagg Run.

The next day started of clear, but sprinkled rain a bit in the early afternoon. It stopped as I ate supper and set up my hammock, but then rained most of the night. I sure slept good listening to the rain. Especially after a 24 mile day into Quarry Gap Shelter.

I actually slept in a bit, which was nice, and strolled an easy 20 miles to just before the PA/MD border. I set up right beside Falls Creek and enjoyed listening to the water run as I drifted off. Instead of "porch mode" with my tarp, I opened the ends up so I can see straight out as I lay in my hammock. I called this "vista mode."

The last day of my hike was a fun one. I expected rain all day, and wasn't disapointed! I made the 27 miles into Washington Monument Park where I enjoyed some mac-n-cheese and an amazing view while I waited my lovely wife to come pick this hiker bum up! It was an amazing hike that really rejuvenated my spirits. Some fresh, cool air.... good exercise, great nights sleep in the hammock.... life is good.

Here's a video of parts of the trip that I managed to slow down a bit and take. Enjoy!

I have eaten at Anile's in Boiling Springs before, but not this trip. I came through too early and they weren't open yet. I had the itch to keep moving, so off I went.

This part of the AT is fairly easy, so the miles aren't that big of a deal. My feet did swell so much I thought my shoes were going to burst!

I was especially careful to check each site as I packed to make sure I had my straps with orange Dutch clips! I even stopped once a mile into a start to open my pack and make sure I had them! Love those things!!!

The orange Dutch biners really did there job with the rain. I tried to video the rain dropping off them and not coming down the line, but it was dusk and it didn't quite capture it clear enough.

Awesome trip report and some great vid. and pics. Your post has inspired me to attempt the 98 miles from Front Royal to Pen Mar this December that I've been wanting to get done. I know a whole different beast within itself. You are a hiking machine and I look forward to hiking with you (or behind ya ) again soon.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

Gummy Bears for breakfast, Snicker bars several times through the day.... 20+ miles no problem!

The only issue I had was shoes, and I was lucky. I recently bought a new pair of trail runners for this hike, and got them in my normal size. I meant to get 1/2 size larger. My feet swell when I hike like this. I had no blisters, but my feet were stretching the shoes out very tight each night.

My new ULA Ohm pack carried wonderfully. Thanks LRR!

My load, with 4 days of food and water, was at 20 lbs.

The scenery was spectacular this time of year. It was a fantastic hike!

Next up: Tuscarora Trail, Northern 1/2 next May!

Sounds like an awesome hike, you put some miles on much more than I can do! I used to be able to do that kind of mileage but after I hurt my knee's, it's about a 1/4 what you are doing!

Plus I sleep in while on the trail !!
