I don't know where in up state NY you are but some places near the Daks rent snowshoes. Bed and breakfast places, outfitters, ski resorts ect. often offer rentals on snow shoes. They usually, every few years, sell 'old' pairs so their stuff is new. I know for about what your budget is you can prob snag a pair. Ya just gotta find who, near you, is renting shoes and get in contact to see if they are rotating stock this year. Just sayin.
I like refried beans. That's why I wanna try fried beans, because maybe they're just as good and we're just wasting time. You don't have to fry them again after all.

I think a few people here picked up the Military Surplus Snowshoes from Sportsman's Guide. They're around $40-45 right now - not sure what shipping would do to that though.
