Ripstop nylon---------

I am about to try my hand at a DIY hammock and want to go with as lightweight a fabric as possible. The problem is i weigh 250 lbs and would like this to last me without catistrophic failure. My question to you fine folks is, what is the lightest weight ripstop i can go with, and still be safe ? Thanks for your help.

I am going to go with a double layer of 1.9 ripstop when I make my hammock.

I just made one from supplex nylon: 2.5 oz/yd. I used it a couple of weekends ago very successfully. A bit heavier, but I'm not a frequent backpacker.

I just hemmed the edges, whipped the ends with amsteel, hung with polypro straps. Worked very nicely.

I have used a single layer of 1.9 ripstop nylon from Outdoor Wilderness Fabrics with no issues and I am at 300. But I did make myself a double layer out of the same material, just to be onthe safe side!!!!!!!!!!

260 here and I use 1.9 single layer. No issues at all. I see no need to go double layer or thicker material. I'm out camping roughly once/month.

I'm 285 and have had no issues using a single layer 1.9. I also have a dbl layer 1.5.

I am also currently looking into making my first hammock and would like to go single layer as well. Can anyone attest to the sustained durability of a single layer as opposed to a double layer for us bigger fellas? (I tip the scales at around 230 myself)

I like the feel of supplex a lot. I use it for abrasion resistance (read: "dog toenails"). For a strong single layer hammock it's a great choice. I think 1.9 oz ripstop nylon should work, too. I like single layer hammocks much better than doubles.

Thanks guys. Think I'll be doing 1.9 single. Not sure though. Also looking at the eno type fabric at diy store. Depends on what i find at the local fabric store. Again, thanks for the help guys.

WV - I hope that refers to an actual dog, and not your own nails - that is an image I would now like to get out of my mind.
