    Home suspension advice?

    Hey All,

Been awhile since I've been around here, I know. I will try to pop in more often.

Anywho, I have been using a nice Brazilian hammock as my bed for a few months now, and the cheap old rope that I had spanning the distance between the ceiling and the hammock decided to break on me. While I was in it of course

So now I'm trying to figure out what kind of rope/cord I should get to avoid that in the future.

I know that amsteel has a lot of great uses, and I would like to pick some up eventually for my camping adventures, but that seems like it might be overkill for an indoor setup. Weight doesn't really matter, I'm more interested in longer term durability.

I'm hoping there there is some kind of rope I can pick up fairly cheaply at my local hardware store or REI or even off of Amazon, I'm just not sure what to look for. I don't want to buy something that is cheap and will end up breaking on me.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm fortunately going to be away from my place for the next few days, and I have an air mattress I could use for awhile but I'll want to have my real bed back soon enough

    Peace,

    -Daniel

Amsteel is cheap for what it is, it's more durable than anything else you will likely find and is readily available from a number of vendors here. (cough) REI will stock a variety of nylon(stretch) ropes for climbing that while strong enough will Stretch and in most cases will cost just as much or more.

I've recently started hanging full time.

I started with cheap nylon rope but really didn't like the stretch in it, so I went back to some faithfull amsteel whoopie slings. It'll be staying.

Pure vectran braid is a bit cheaper and heavier than dyneema but is still non-stretch and very hard wearing.

I have some 1/4 inch camo rope from Menards Ive used outside for about 6 years. It was like $5. Because you want durable and cheap and it's indoors have you thought about just getting some chain from the hardware store?

If you have a source for or can find some Muletape it is more than adequate. Telephone companies use it for pulling cables thru duct runs. Before I retired they used to dump miles of it in the dumpster. Then there are the tiedown straps at Harbor Frieght, just remove the hardware. Might be able to come up with some MT if you can't locate any locally.

I don't like using Amsteel with an indoor Brazilian for two reasons.
    - the thin Amsteel might cut into the cotton hammock ropes
    - it ruins the hammock's aesthetic

I like good old 3/8" nylon three strand because.
    - easy to find at stores
    - knots well

Tie one end of the 3/8" rope to your wall or ceiling anchors. At the hammock use a double sheet bend to attach the rope to the eye in the hammock's suspension. The sheet bend allows for easy adjustment of the suspension length.

This offering from Home Depot is has a working load that sounds too low but that number probably has a safety factor built in. If you really want to play it safe get the same size from a marine store like West Marine. Way stronger than needed.
Stretch is not much of an issue, especially since the nylon rope won't be getting wet indoors.

Thanks for all the advice. I might look into chain, I hadnt thought about that. I already have plenty of chrome with my 'biners and the metal loops in the ceiling. Would definitely be durable.

Otherwise some 1/4-3/8 rope would probably be fine. I think that's more or less what I had before but it was quite old & had been outside and clearly affected by uv etc. It was only supposed to be temporary anyway, just took me falling on my butt to remember that
