Hanging from the basement (I Bolts?)

Hey all, So I recently moved and now have a basement! That means I'm hangin!

My basement has open 2x6 ceiling joist. Now I could just drill holes and loop my webbing through them but I'm not big on drilling lots of holes in my house. I am thinking about using I Bolts. I'm just not sure if it would be best to insert the I bolt from the side of the 2x6 or strait up into the bottom. I'm not sure if there would be enough "meat" to insert an I Bolt. The obvious concern is the wood would split from going strait up. I was thinking about attaching a chain shackle. There would still be a hole but much smaller then I could just move the two shackles from place to place in my basement easily. Ploblem is I can find any large enough to slide onto a 2x6, atleat ones that are not crazy expensive. So what do you all think? If there are any other suggestions I'm open to them.

Go hit the "big box" stores and take a tour of the lumber and decking area. There are all kinds of funky metal brackets for hanging and attaching 2x dimensional lumber. I'm sure you can come up with something better/stronger than what you're describing. I've seen some metal brackets for hanging a porch swing from 2x joists but I don't know if they have a specific name.

    Good Luck

Look for porch swing hanging kit or you could use a lag bolt extended from both sides of the 2x6. Just be sure to cover the lag bolt to not ruin your suspension. The lag bolt can be used like a large toggle.

Buy two eye bolts with a 3/4 inch diameter and 4 washers and 4 nuts. Drill a 3/4 inch hole through the joist about 1 1/2 inches from the bottom edge. Slide washer over eye bolt, slide through hole, slide other washer over eyebolt, then thread first nut on and snug up, then thread second nut on and tighten up against first nut.

THis allows for moderate expansion and contraction of wood due to humidity over time, without nut working loose.

This should easily hold up 400 pounds without any noticible weakening of the floor joists.

Then you can connect webbing directly or use a snap carabiner

I have been looking around and found that all those little metal brackets can get pretty expensive, atleast more expensive than drilling a hole. But yes I will keep looking , thanks.

I use 2 - 3/8 inch thick eye bolts with wood screw threads, not nut compatible. I also put them on the opposite side from where the hammock hangs, using a carabiner to attach to the eye.

sort of like this ol l l l l lo where the o represents the eye bolt and the l is a joist.

This puts most of the strain into the floor joist I am hanging from. Mind you, my house is really old and the rough sawn lumber that makes up the joists is a true 2 inches thick.

from a structural stand point, it will take a lot of stress off of the 2x6 joist if you spread the load over several joist. at our old house i used a 10' deck board (5/4" x 6" x 10") cut into 5' pieces.
i screwed them to the joists with 2 1/2" coarse drywall screws then put an eye bolt through the deck board, between the joist.
    it worked like a champ.

I figured that would be my best bet as well. Did you consider running the bolts the bolts strait up into the 2x6's? The thing about my beams is they are running the same way my hammock will be running. so I could put on bolt on the left side and one on the right side but I dont know if that really matters not. I can see why you would place them opposite sides.

    +1 on Flatline's method.

Adds structural rigidity to the joist system, allows flexibility in anchoring the hammock, eliminates the need for drilling 3.8" or larger holes in the joists......What is there not to like?
