Has anyone made an interchangeable underquilt?

I am playing with this idea in my head where I would make an underquilt but instead of filling it directly, leave the baffles as open slots where you would just have to make tubes of down to fill them with. This way you would have one underquilt shell that you could wash and you could interchange the down to whatever temp rating you needed. So you could have a summer, fall/spring, and winter quilt all in one and you would just have to store the sets of tubes.

Would this work or would it not breathe right?

This is an interesting idea! It might end up weighing a bit more than other quilts, as you have to add in the weight of the material that's holding the down that you'll be interchanging. Still, nice concept.

The ideas on this forum continue to amaze my simple mind.

Can't imagine why it wouldn't work.

I'm imagining a baffled shell with omnitape at the head or foot end. Open that, slide your down tubes in, and close the velcro.

Oohh, I like the velcro idea. I had thought about using a drawstring on each tube-velcro would be easier.

I'd imagined velcro on the entire width at the head or foot end of the main body of the quilt with the down tubes permanently filled and sealed.

You'd have
8 summer tubes
8 three season tubes
8 winter tubes
etc.

Slip in the ones you want and velcro the body closed.

Can't imagine a way to allow for cinching the end taut the way a traditional UQ does as you would have no grosgrain channel to run shockcord through.

Just brainstorming.

I attempted this with a hammock sock. I have used the hammock sock but the foam I inserted did not stay in place. so now I just use the sock without the foam. Making tubes of down and making some sort of end closing might work better

drawstrings would keep weight down

Yeah, the tubes would be permanently sealed. I got that the velcro would be on the shell. But would the velcro side cinch right when you tighten up the ends? Maybe fill the baffles from an overlapped center slot on the hammock side of the baffles? Then save the weight of the velcro. I have to get some fabric so I can play with a small model.

hmmm.. if you used tubes of down with drawstring on each end. there would have to be something on each end of the tubes to hold them straight so they don't slide & bunch up to the middle
