One of the reasons I got to thinking about a down filled integral UQ is that the UQ is already sometimes the more expensive part, nylon is cheap by comparison. I guess if a hammock was damaged beyond repair, the down could be reclaimed.
I think it could have a spot for gram counters, as half the UQ shell would no longer be needed, and no suspension.

You may want to look at Just Jeff's Hammock Camping Pages. I think you will find that much of what is being discussed in this thread today has some solutions from several years ago.

I was just at a busines conference on the Nike HD campus and they mentioned something about a fabric they have in development that has pores that open when its hot and close when its cool. I can only imagine the applications!

our great grandchildren will sleep under photo voltaic tarps that are, at least, as flexible
and lightweight as sil nylon. they will power heated quilts, hammocks and lighted ridge lines.
stoves and water filtration will be powered by solar acquired energy.

I think developments in portable hammock stands are in the future. Consider: mass-market application for families/groups to camp with the "ease" of a big tent, plus, hanging in areas in tree-less areas or campgrounds with restrictions.

Think of a "Hammock Yurt" that is as simple and lightweight as big family tents but with attachment points for multiple hammocks, integrated bug netting, and rain protection. When I think of my big family tent, it's great that we are all close by, and even have separate rooms, but bedding gets trampled during the day's activities and "living" space is taken up by bed rolls. Wouldn't it be cool to have a big "tepee" style tent with a nice living space in the center and hammocks strung all around?

On the forums, we've played with tensegrity stands and anchored stands for multiple people, but they are not as easy to construct for the lay-hanger.

So, some kind of cool, futuristic, multi-person hammock structure that uses super-strong materials but is lightweight and easy to deploy?

Thought about this for a bit....and it's kind mentioned on the thread on peapods. I'd like to see a lighter weight higher temp rated PeaPod.
I think the pod concept is unsung, has huge potential, and if a much cheaper lighter model was out there it would be a great way esp for noobs to get into the sport with much less fiddle factor.

In my dream, I'd like to see a hanging bed/hammock with light weight, synthetic, controlled temperature insulation that is sewn to the bottom and then the sides wrap up around me for my top quilt....and foot box is sewn in also. This would be my spring, fall and winter hammock.
