    Making a hammock in Australia

Hi all, I need a bit of your collective wisdom.

Reading the forum has inspired me to have a go at making my own hammock I have some ideas I want to explore about hammocks for tropical areas Fortunately my wife has a good-quality sewing machine that she never uses looks like I get have first go!!
I know there are plenty of good suppliers of D I Y materials in the USA. However making a hammock in Australia it's a bit harder to get hold of the raw materials at a reasonable price.
(We seem to have virtually no local suppliers that I can find! Particularly as I live in a remote area)
Question for anyone who has made a hammock outside the US if you're sourcing materials from the USA who have been the best suppliers? In terms of value for money, the big one in Oz shipping costs, getting the materials to you in a reasonable length of time?
Your ideas would be most welcome
    thanks
    I-NT

I've looked into it, and after taking into account cost of material and shipping to Oz, I came to the conclusion that the only reason I would make my own hammock was to achieve a sense of self-satisfaction. Otherwise it was cheaper to just buy one.

As an example, Amazon has a GT Ultralite shipped to Oz for under A$20. You can't even buy the ripstop nylon in Sydney for that price!

If you really want to make your own, your best bet is to try eBay. I did see a some ripstop at reasonable prices, but the shipping tends to even things out.

I have heard good things about thru-hiker.com and diygearsuply.com but have not had anything to do with either... yet...
I have made a hammock with ripstop nylon, purchased from the only store in Hobart that carried it (only in white too!!!) and made a hammock for $25. I intend to purchase a number of things from one or both of the above companies and ripstop nylon is going to be part of that order. I think i can get enough ripstop to me to make a hammock for FAR less than the $25 it cost to buy locally...

Do you have to deal with the same customs issues and fees from a individual person as you do from a business?

Spotlight has some 1.9 ripstop everynow and again. Never sure on price though and last I knew they did ship as well.

I got some for about 3 bucks a meter a year or so back. Makes a pretty good hammock!

    Best of luck eh.

    Hiya.
I've purchased from DIY gear supply, thru-hiker and arrowhead equipment (Im in Sydney) and I've had great experiences with all. Postage was most reasonable with arrowhead and DIY gear supply.
Goodluck with your DIY :-) (and enjoy...its very addictive though).
