Real easy way, found a local Boy Scout office, many will carry some pre-made staffs... also kits to make your own. Other way is to DIY using either tool handle from big box store, or get a 6' section of 1" dowel rod and add accourtments.

Normally I use trek poles for hiking, but I do occasionally take my "Staff of many items" Boy Scout staff to Scouting events.

Most Cracker Barrell stores also have walking staffs.
.... the Aardvark (earth pig)... a rather unremarkable creature whose sole claim to fame is that it is the first animal listed in the dictionary.

They sold lots of difernet ones at the Ren Faire near Charlotte this weekend. Maybe look for a Ren fair in your state:

After I destroyed my ankle and was laid-up for several months, I made one out of a martial arts tapered oak bo staff.
Real solid and I carved in a Celtic knotwork pattern for the hand grip area.
    Straight and solid.
    Just what I needed!

Ocean State Job Lot has 'em for about $10-15. Nice looking staffs too.
I was told there'd be no math on this exam. ~T.D.

If you can find bamboo in your area, you can easily make a walking staff from bamboo. You need to find a section long enough (easy) and the right diameter (again pretty easy).

Sand down the joins between sections. Make a hand grip using Amsteel - gray so that the dye doesn't dye your hand. Just wrap.

    Makes a great walking staff.

+1 all i used until about a month ago.i now use two poles.strength of bamboo for the weight is amazing.any hardware store has rubber kitchen chair things that go on the end of the legs to keep you from scratching the floor,a drop of crazy glue so it wont come off and you have a very nice staff.make it a little longer than you are tall and when your hiking the natural mechanics will knock down spider webs before you do it with your face.thats what i miss the most since going to poles, but i did it for speader bars for my bridge hammock.if i couldnt find bamboo my next choice would be a hickory sapling.

I know at my local academy they have one wood walking stick, might be worth checking out so that you don't have to pay shipping
