Grand Canyon Pre-Planning

Very interested depending on when it flushes out. My son is planning a through hike of the AT in 2012. I'll be with him for the first week or so. But a fall trip is possible depending on how long it takes him to do the AT.
I'd also be up for a carpool of us eastcoasters.

I've been to the Grand Canyon twice (first on the South Rim 2nd on the North Rim) but did not hang. Once you drop down into the Canyon there is not a lot of options to hang. I plan on going back again next year! Awesome, Awesome, Awesome!!!

I've gone there for 20 yrs and past seven r eight yrs to start summer trek toward southwest, northwest parks from there, I seldom have gone to south rim because to many folks, the north rim campground has always been hammock friendly and has not ask to remove hammock during day, as is my understanding on south rim, there are some places away from campground but sometimes difficult to get to. The north rim closes usually Oct to may and its a drive to get to, but nice. I'm game for grand canyon anytime, in park reservations for campground and down to the river are must. I usually make mine in Jan for june, great place either side. fall is great time as temps allow for all day trekking. i use biv sack down in canyon. Anyway I'd be up GC anytime

I voted N-Rim CG only due to the facilities & chillin on the terraces at the lodge is rather pleasant but Wilderness is great to. Views are also much better at North Rim IMO.

Although the North Rim is a little more of a journey it is less crowded & more scenic plus I just dig the buffalo . The S-Rim would be better for those wishing to hike into the canyon and is easier for most to get to.

I would like to do this trip too if the time frame works out. I am uninformed about all things pertaining to hiking, camping, best places for each at the GC so I'll leave all that up to everyone else. Just tell me when, where to go and how to get there.

Would love to go back, but probably can't.

Question, though. I just don't remember all that many trees there. Maybe there were and they just didn't jump out at me, but to handle a big hang, I hope there are enough sturdy trees

Anyone wishing to do an overnight into the canyon will need a Backcountry Permit. It can be submitted on the 1st day of the month, 4 months prior. Spring and fall are the prime hiking months and permits are filled up quickly. The larger the group, the less likely you are to get what you want. If you have some flexibility in dates, it helps a lot. You can fax it to them at 12:01 AM on the 1st, but they will only respond by snail mail. It's pretty inexpensive and you will not be charged if you don't get the permit. Here is the link for Backcountry Permits

The Colorado summer hang worked well with a combination car camping and hike. There are more hiking options away from the corridor off the south rim.

I do not hike the Canyon between the first week of May and the third week of September. My favorite time is the first week on November - cool weather and fewer people. However, that is not the best time for hanging on the rim.

I would be happy to apply for a six person permit if I can arrange my schedule for a fall 2012 hang and hike.

BTW I have a four night Hermit/Boucher loop permit starting December 4 that can be pushed to six people if anyone is interested.

I'd vote for Wilderness N. Rim....was there a few years ago and WOW!!!! What a view when waking up 25' from the rim....watch that first step....maybe camp one night before and one night after....
