I've been thing about this too. Will either be a SW .38 or Ruger LCR .38 revolver. I like the idea of having the pistol on my person in the hammock. I sleep both on my back and side in the HH BE, so I would use a IWB holster on my right side slide toward my belly where I would normally look for it, or in a holster velcroed inside the hammock. Has anybody considered an ankle holster?
I carry a Glock 19 in a Comptac CTAC IWB holster. No issues with discomfort with the pack hipbelt over the top even hiking long distances. In the hammock it goes on the BB shelf or sometimes stays on my hip. Not an issue since I sleep on my back.
Glock 19
I plan on putting it in the pouch built into my ENO single nest.
Carry it in a holster from www.valleykydex.com on my belt when on the move.
I've been looking at one of these:
Crye GunClip. It would hook on a RL as well as onto my pack or belt. That hinge point looks like a RL would fit in there very nicely.
It's set up for MOLLE straps, but could be adapted for a regular pack as well.

My Glock 27 is right beside my right hip in each one of my hammocks.
Here's what I'm testing. Simple, but since I haven't tried it out overnight yet, I can't really vouch for its effectiveness yet. I have a K-frame S&W in a Blackhawk nylon holster which is also my carry holster, attached through the belt loop to the whoopie loop above my head. It points away from me and the retention strap holds the gun in, but I can unsnap it and grab it quickly if I need to. It sits about a foot above my head.
This should work the same for semi-autos as well, with the retention strap around the grip instead of the hammer.
I used paracord since I was testing, but I would think a zing-it whoopie would be ideal for adjustability.
No real dangers here, so i just carry a small 22cal. (for noise more or less) and keep it in the pocket of my claytor mosquito hammock. I do a lot of survival camping and also take a henry survival rifle (AR7), 22cal. works for both. Like i said survival camping so i only get the AR7 out of the pack to kill game for food never keep in in the hammock.
I carry a .357 magnum in a thigh holster while packing and flip it around for a similar set up to BullFrog's in the hammock. I just use a prussic soft shackle and slide it all the way up...tried it on the ridgeline a couple nights while convenient for quick access it was also perpetually in the way.(Headache)
I posted a while back that I intended to design and build a device for holding and maintaining a handgun in place at the head of my Speer hammock. But after thinking about it, I came back to an idea very much like BullFrog’s. The handgun will already be in a holster, so why not rig a suspension system to keep the holster in place and let the holster itself retain the weapon? That way, regardless of the gun you are carrying at the time, the holster retention system should work. Nice job of simplifying the problem.
