My first hammock was made of polyester taffeta albeit an indoor one it is working well. I;d estimate the weight of the fabric @ 2.5 oz/yd.

You can use any material strong enough to hold you up, but most materials are suitable for backpacking for various reasons.

I used tafetta to 10 cents por meter, weighing 180 pounds and supports me.
