Hi There! I'm kinda new to hammocks, but not new to DIY. I've been sleeping in a hammock in my house since late July, after I came up with a nifty stand for it that didn't involve drilling holes in the walls. I sleep in a mayan hammock in the summer and a brazilian hammock in the winter (currently with a heated blanket, and my dog, since I refuse to heat my house). My dog loves sleeping in the hammock as much as I do, especially when I bury him in blankets, he'll sleep for hours. Great fun.
I want to get into hammocking/backpacking and camping, but haven't gotten that far yet, but I'm sure I'll be lurking around here when the time comes.
Anyways, here's my new suspension for my nightly sleeping hammock:

Yep, that's the a-frame from a sawhorse kit. The legs are 6' tall. The ridge-stud started life as a 12' stud, which was cut down to 10' or so, so it butts up against both walls - I've nailed a nylon chair foot glider thingy on each end to prevent wall damage. I have a book shelf under this end. No wasted floor space. I love it. You can see the old less-classy hangar in my flickr photos if you dig enough, but it's really not worth seeing. I suppose I could eliminate the biner in this setup, but I just haven't bothered yet, it works fine.
My next plans for this particular design will be to build it into a viking a-frame style tent for the pinnacle in luxurious car camping.
