Would this stuff work any better (or worse) for tie out and ridgelines for a tarp than the Zing It stuff?

You could do worse than to have a long piece of strong cordage--1500lb breaking strength -- in a non-essential role. This is about twice the weight of Zing-It, which to many would be twice negligible weight. An extra ounce for 11 yards of it.

It strong enough to permit de-rating from knots you will tie in it.

What about tying knots and tangles and things like that? Is it as easy to work with as the Zing It stuff?

It is overkill for RL and tarp tieouts. Ideally, you want the rope/line to break before your tarp does and in certain conditions, the amsteel will hold whereas your tarp - sil, spinn or cuben - will tear first.

Amsteel doesn't do well with knots as it's slipper and knots derate it's strength. It is easy to work with, easier than Zing It but again, overkill unless it's part of your hammock suspension.

What can be done for the tarp tie-outs is to attatch a piece of shock cord between the amsteel and the tarp, that way the shock cord will keep everything tight and it would be the first to break.

At 1600 pound test the Amsteel it's definitely overkill for a ridgeline
