I actually work in SF downtown. Let me know if you would like to try a few hammocks. I have a pretty good selection of hammocks/gear and would be glad to help you along your journey.

Welcome From 90 miles NE of San Francisco. I live up here in the mountains so I have lots of trees to practice my hanging. I'm down in SF at least 2 to 5 times a month. I think one of these days we all need to get a Hammock Hang in Northern CA going if there hasn't already been one.
Welcome from Davis, CA. I second the Nor Cal Hang! Haven't tried a Winter Hang yet...anyone interested?
Welcome from the 'Ding (Redding), about to move to Weed. Yeah, northern Cal hang sounds great! Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall.
I also ride a motorcycle (Suzuki Burgman scooter, actually), so add another proposal to the list
Hello OP! Can't help you much with your questions: I've been 5'11" since about 5th grade. A loooooong time ago. and 150lbs is waaaay too skinny for me.

As for the rest of all-you-alls...
Feather Falls first of April. This is a hike-in hang.
If anyone knows for sure a place to car-camp where we can hang a lot of hammocks that is either reserve-able or not so crowded that we won't find space when we get there, SPEAK UP. Please.

Sidewinder, thanks, I'd appreciate that! I'm such a total noob, any and all help is most welcome!
Liz, sounds like we have very different body types! For me, 150 is about as far from skinny as I've ever gotten. But then, I'm only 5'3"
All, thanks for the warm welcome! I'd love to join y'all on a No Cal hang once I get a hammock. I'm probably not the best to suggest hammocking campgrounds, but I do know some great places to camp in No Cal. I'll just have to remember where they are, then maybe someone else will be able to answer how good they are hammock-wise.
I'll be sure to look into the hang. At the same time, there is a really great place for a hang in my area. Bogg's Demonstration Park. http://boggsmountain.org/index.htm I've done a number of hangs there & would be great for a group as it's one of the few parks where it's empty 95% of the time.
Welcome to HF!
